Award-winning Balsam Range returns to Smoky Mountain Center

The Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts will welcome Balsam Range on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m.  Balsam Range is a group of multi-talented musicians who take a creative blend of bluegrass, folk, and gospel music and provide an entertaining concert experience.  Tickets start at just $18 each and priority seating is available.

A group of five fantastic musicians and singers from Haywood County make up the band called Balsam Range. They have many accolades to their credit, including more than a dozen International Bluegrass Music Association awards.  Most recently, Balsam Range was named the 2018 IBMA Entertainer of the Year.  They have become one of bluegrass music’s most award-winning acts.  Balsam Range has had multiple national number one hits including, “Blue Collar Dreams,” “The Girl Who Invented The Wheel,” and “Trains I Missed.”

Members of Balsam Range are Buddy Melton, Tim Surrett, Marc Pruett, Caleb Smith, and Darren Nicholson.  

Melton has been playing the fiddle since college and is also an accomplished bass player.  He was named IBMA’s Male Vocalist of the Year in 2014.  

Surrett has performed with Ralph Stanley, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, and many other notable artists.  He has a place in the Southern Gospel Hall of Fame and won the IBMA Mentor Award for his inspiration and work with young artists.  

Pruett is a Grammy-winning banjo picker who played on four albums with Ricky Skaggs. He earned an honorary doctorate from Western Carolina University in 2010 for his contributions to bluegrass music.  

Smith has also won Male Vocalist of the Year and Guitar Player of the Year awards.  He is an accomplished luthier, building Smith Custom Guitars for clients such as Zac Brown. 

Nicholson has toured with many artists and is a Grammy award nominee. He has also won multiple IBMA awards.  

Balsam Range has headlined many sold-out music festivals from coast to coast and are welcomed performers at the Grand Ole Opry.
