On Tuesday, Aug. 15, Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, and Macon County Schools (MCS) partnered to launch the district’s new STEM education program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and further explain how it will benefit the local learning community.

This event celebrated the transformative process Macon County Schools is about to embark on, and the leaders who are helping this culture shift take off.

“The purpose is to give teachers and administrators who may not be familiar with the STEM PD [professional development] being offered more information and a better understanding of how this PD is going to “STEMulate” the teaching of STEM and project-based learning in the classroom,” said Jennifer Love, STEM coordinator for Macon County Schools.

During the session, participating teachers engaged in thought provoking conversations, inquiry based immersions, and self-reflective activities. By the end of the session, participants were able to find their STEM “voice” and walk away being able to illustrate this vision.

“Through the Golden Leaf Grant, we are trying to teach teachers how to integrate STEM into every subject,” said Love. “This should not be one more thing to teach but a way to teach everything.”

The event was led by Cindy Moss, a nationally recognized leader in STEM education, participants will explore the what and why of STEM in education to accelerate academic achievement and a student engagement to transform a culture of teaching and learning.

The Mission Statement for Macon County Schools STEM Program is, “STEM is creating a community of problem solvers to lead Macon County into the future.”

The STEM directive is to empower students to think critically about issues facing the community and problem-solve real solutions so that our home (local to global) will thrive and adapt to a continually changing world. Tuesday’s seminar was one resource for Macon County teachers.
