Winfield Albert Prentice Jr.

Winfield Albert Prentice Jr., 79, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, July 24, 2017.

Born in Salisbury, Vt., he was the son of the late Winfield Albert Prentice Sr. and Lillian Mabel Smith Prentice. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Emma Lane Prentice and a brother, Roger Prentice. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He enjoyed watching Westerns and Nascar races.

He is survived by nine children, Wanda Morin of Clinton, Maine, Joseph Lane, Wendy Bryson, Robin Krajocovic and Roxanne Locke, all of Franklin, Randy Prentice of Deer Run, Pa., Wanita Kent of Cornelia, Ga., Rory Prentice of Alexandria, N.H., and Rusty Prentice of Lufkin, Texas; brothers and sisters, Larry Prentice of Franklin, N.H., Johnny Prentice of Newport, N.H., Helen Keyser and Peggy Keyser both of Northfield, N.H.; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

No services are planned.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Franklin Volunteer Fire Department.

George L. McGahagin

George L. McGahagin

George L. McGahagin, 89, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017.

Born in Wauchula, Fla., he was the son of the late James Z. McGahagin and Lilly Bessie Johnson McGahagin. He was a U.S. Navy and Air Force veteran serving during WWII; lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion Post 108 and retired from USPS.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Annie Ruth Tuttle McGahagin; two daughters, Gwendolyn K. Wood and Sharon R. McGahagin, both of Plano, Texas; and a granddaughter, Delaney Wood-Van Vranken of Austin, Texas.

No services are planned.

Marilyn Virginia Vosburgh Laing

Marilyn Virginia Vosburgh Laing, 90, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017.

Born in Plymouth, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Harold and Bess Griswald Vosburgh.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, William Earle Laing Jr. who died Aug. 27, 2016, and a sister, Jean Dalstrohm. She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.

She is survived by three children, Matt Laing and wife Lynn of Madison, Ala., Michael Laing and wife Sue of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mark Laing and wife, Jeanette of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 5, at Ridgecrest Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Guy Duvall will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Ridgecrest Baptist Church.

Charles ‘Gilbert’ Beck

Charles ‘Gilbert’ Beck

Charles “Gilbert” Beck, 76 of Highlands, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.  He was born in Macon County, the son of the late James William and Beulah Henry Beck. He was retired from the Town of Highlands where he worked as a lineman. After retirement he worked 10 years for Bryson’s Food Store. He also retired as a member of Highlands Fire Department.  He was a member of Highlands Lions Club and drove a school bus. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a very faithful member and deacon of Blue Valley Baptist Church.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susie Beck, daughters, Nowana Barnes (Keith), Joan Hobbs, and Gilberta Shaheen (Jon) all of Highlands; grandchildren, Charissa Herron, Megan Passmore, Christopher Tallent, Susan Barnes, Michael Beck, Dillan Medlin, Savannah Shaheen and John Hayes Shaheen; five great grandchildren; four brothers, Sammie Beck, Jake Beck, John Beck and Butch Beck and also his Church family.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Beck.

A funeral service was held Saturday, July 29, at Blue Valley Baptist Church, with Rev. Oliver Rice and Rev. Allen Aiken officiating.  The Highlands Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.  Military honors will be performed by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 pm Saturday prior to the service at the Church.  Burial will be at Highlands Memorial Park Cemetery.

Donald F. Conway

Donald F. Conway

Donald F. Conway, 80, of Franklin, N.C., went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday, July 29, 2017.

Born in Boggstown, Ind., he was the son of the late Samuel and Mary Conway. He was a U.S. Navy veteran; an active member of Iotla Baptist Church, formerly serving as Sunday School director, finance committee and member of the Berean Sunday School Class.  He was a retired computer engineer and enjoyed farming.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gerry Conway; two children, Melanie Tate and husband Jeff and Troy Conway and wife Kathi both of Franklin; and two grandchildren, Joshua Tate and Sam Conway.

Graveside service were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Brandon Breedlove and Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at Macon Funeral Home.

Mary E. “Mink” Lewis Brooks

Mary E. “Mink” Lewis Brooks passed away to heaven July 27, 2017.  She was the daughter of the late W.O. Lewis and Alice Vashti Kiser Lewis.  She was married to Clarence W. Brooks, who passed away in 1987. She was a member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church.

A private graveside service was held.

Jeanine ‘Jeanie’ Ruth Long

Jeanine ‘Jeanie’ Ruth Long

Jeanie Long, 64 of Franklin, N.C.,  entered eternal life with her Lord Jesus on Thursday July 27, 2017, with her family by her side.  Born in Red Oak, Iowa, Aug. 25, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Paul Earl Long and Ruth Gladys Silkett Kempton-Hayes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Jason Scott Boylan.

She graduated from Lewis Central High in Council Bluffs IA. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Christian Counseling from United Christian Bible Institute. She was an ordained minister through the United Faith Christian Ministries.  She worked at Franklin Auction with her longtime friends, the Vernelson family. Her Australian Shephard Jett was her daily companion at work and everywhere she ventured.  She was a strong independent woman that was a friend to all.  Her presence will be missed. Her memory we will treasure, loving her always.

Those left to celebrate her life include her daughter, Carissa Buckson and husband Noel, and grandsons, Parker, Maddox, and Teagan of Warrensburg Mo.; her granddaughter, Sophie Boylan of Anderson, Mo.; and sister, Cindy Richter and husband Jerry of Sydney, Iowa.

A celebration of Jeanie’s life will be held at Franklin Auction, 113 Bowling Lane, on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 4 p.m. Condolences can be made at carissaeve@gmail.com.

Mary Carrillo Reagan

Mary Carrillo Reagan, 86, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Born in Tampa, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Louis Carrillo and Esperanza Daubar Grass Carrillo.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Reagan, who died March 28, 2005; and a sister, Modesty Grass Tournade.

She is survived by two brothers, George G. Grass of Eustis, Fla., and Louis Phillip Carrillo of Lutz, Fla.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m., at Macon Funeral Home.  Dr. Robert Brown will officiate.  Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.
