Donald R. Miller

Donald R. Miller, 97, of Franklin, N.C., died Thursday, March 24, 2016, at a local nursing home.

Born in Indianapolis, Ind., he was the son of the late Frank and Dora Miller. He served four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII (1941 to 1945). He and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Franklin in 1991 from St. Petersburg, Fla.; he enjoyed this area so much. He was an honorary member of the Macon County Art Association.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marilyn H. Miller; two brothers, Max E. Miller and William N. Miller and many nieces and nephews.

No services will be held.

Edgar ‘Eddie’ Ervin Crane

Edgar “Eddie” Ervin Crane, 57, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, March 21, 2016.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Ervin Andrew and Margie Hurst Crane.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia “Cindy” Flynn Crane; brother, Jim Crane and sister, Brenda Rich. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

He is survived by his companion, Julia Dowdle; daughters, Stephanie Bowles (Shawn) of Franklin; Ashley Murphy (Matthew) of Graham, N.C.; brothers, Fred, Donnie, Larry and Tom Crane all of Franklin; sisters, Ruth Ann Stancil of Franklin, Virginia Hylton of Otto, N.C.; grandchildren, Sutton Bowles, Tatum Murphy; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Friday, March 25, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Gary McCoy officiated. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Rick Crane, Bryan Burt, David Cheek, Daniel Crane, Zachary Crane and Bryson Burt.

Kevin Charles Kruse

Kevin Charles Kruse, 67, of Glenville, N.C., passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016.

Born in Rahway, N.J., he was the son of the late Norman Kruse and Sarah Doyle Kruse. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy Kruse. He loved God’s creation whether it meant surfing, life-guarding as a teen, doing landscaping maintenance in South Florida and the Mountains or just watching the sun go down.

He is survived by two sons, Cayenne Kruse and wife Hannah of Franklin and Seth Kruse and Kayla of Peoria, Ill.; two brothers, Bill Kruse of Acworth, Ga., and Scott Kruse of Los Angeles, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Mary Kruse, August Kruse, Maddie Huskins and Isaac Kruse.

Memorial service was held Thursday, March 31, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.

Louise Ellen Roper Williamson, 90, of Franklin,  N.C., passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016.  She was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Carrie Roper.  She was married for 62 years to Harold Williamson, who died Jan. 8, 2011.  She was also preceded in death by her son, Randall Williamson and several brothers and sisters.  She was a member of Prentiss Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter and husband, Rilla and Wayne Hughart of Horse Shoe; her grandson Jeff Williamson and wife Jody of Franklin; her granddaughter, Sally Ann Williamson of Florence, S.C.; her daughter-in-law, Sheila Williamson of Edneyville, N.C.; two great grandchildren, Mason and Avery Williamson of Franklin; one sister, Ethel Ammons and husband J.R., of Franklin; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, March 24, in the chapel at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Drinnon and Rev. John Raby officiating. Burial was in the Roper Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jeff Williamson, Jim Higdon, Mickey Raby, Billy Ray Rice, Bruce Mason and Bill Higdon.

Marilu Ola Giddens, 96, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016.

Born in Charleston, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Alan and Minnie Watkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Aaron Watkins. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She enjoyed crafting, gardening, traveling, camping, taking pictures and watching tennis.

She is survived by her husband of 75 years, Burrell Jack Giddens; two daughters, Cheryl Kay Schrock and husband Larry of Franklin and Paulette Hunt of Coco Beach, Fla.; one son, Jack Giddens and wife Debbie of Richmond Hill, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Saturday, March 26, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Dr. Robert Brown and Rev. Jim Dusek officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ruby Katherine “Kay” Corpening, 85, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late William (Will) and Myrtle Lewis Corpening. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Clyde, Burt, Robert and George Corpening and one sister, Kate Arnold. She attended First Baptist Church in Franklin. She was a flight attendant for 37 years with Delta Airlines.

She is survived by one brother, Frank Corpening of Franklin; sister, Jane Brannon of Charles Town, W.Va., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, March 29, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Dr. Robert Brown officiated.  Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Lola Helen Wilson, 65, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, March 24, 2016.  She was born in Macon County the daughter of Ethel Lois Jones Waldroop of Franklin, and the late Oran Roosevelt Waldroop.  She was a homemaker, she loved to fish and was a member of Tellico Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Edith Tallent (Kenny)  of Franklin, and Jennifer Loving (Phillip) of Blountville, Tenn.; sons, George Jenkins (Tonda) and Daniel Jenkins (Judy) all of Franklin; brother, James Lee Waldroop; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Charles Monroe Bateman.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 28, in the chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Gary McCoy and Rev. Morris Tippett officiating.

Jewell Dills McKay, 79, of Lakemont, Ga., died peacefully in the early morning hours of Easter Sunday, March 27, following a family gathering to celebrate her upcoming 80th birthday.

Born in Rabun County on March 28, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Maude Justus Dills. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, a bookworm and an excellent cook, and a longtime member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J.L. McKay, and is survived by a son, Alan McKay and his wife Pat of Franklin, N.C., and two daughters, Pat Poss and husband Scott of Tiger and Leah Brooks of Lakemont; seven grandchildren, Ben and Gabe McKay of Franklin, Jordan Poss of Greenville, S.C., Meredith Thompson and Nicolaus Poss of Clayton, Laura Blackwell of Tiger, and John Brooks of Lakemont; and four great-grandchildren, Ky Thompson of Clayton, Ty and Tucker McKay of Franklin, and Sophie Poss of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews she loved as her own. All knew and loved her as “Nanny.”

Funeral service was at Beck Funeral Home Tuesday, March 29. Burial was in Rabun Memory Park.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, 6467 Highway 441 South, Lakemont, Georgia, 30552.

Hunter Anthony Curtis, 22, of Franklin, N.C., died Saturday, March 26, 2016.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of Tony and Monica Stiles Curtis.  He was a 2011 Franklin High School graduate and was the third generation to work in the family business at Curtis TV/Radio Shack.  He attended Discover Church; he was an animal lover, enjoyed big trucks, dirt bikes and riding jet skis.  His favorite thing was music, singing and playing the guitar. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was always the life of the party. He was greatly loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Tony and Monica Stiles Curtis, he is survived by a sister, Morgan Curtis and Derik Breedlove of Demorest, Ga.; paternal grandparents, Verlin and Marvel Curtis; maternal grandparents, Fred and Nina Stiles; aunts and uncles, Jamie Stiles (Tammy), Pam Pattillo (Rocky), Freda Stiles, Susan Parker (Jim), Steve Curtis (Cindy) and Karen Curtis Leslie (David) and many cousins and extended family.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31, at Discover Church. Rev. Steve Reeves, Rev. Patrick Trawick and Rev. Ben Windle will officiate.  Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris Dills, Austin Shuler, Chris Southard, Kyle Southard, Dylan Wyatt, Luke Geigerich, Quinton Pattillo, Grant Stiles and Kellen Stiles.  Honorary pallbearers will be James Parker and Daniel Parker.

David Charles Maynard, 80, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016.

Born in Lorain County, Ohio, he was the son of the late George Washington Maynard and Clara Mahlke Maynard.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Maynard; two sisters, Gladys Williams and Mae Belle Anderson; and a great grandson, Riley Maynard.  He was vice president of Lorain County Title Company and former entrepreneur in Macon County. He was a member of Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church and Junaluskee Lodge No. 145, 3rd degree Mason.  He loved playing guitar, singing, macramé and watching the Atlanta Braves and Duke Blue Devils basketball.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Horn Maynard; three children, Deanna Howard (Rick) of Charlotte, Debra Dills (Allen) of Franklin and Bill Maynard of Pekin, Ill.; one step daughter, Audrey Gray (John) of Franklin; seven grandchildren, Nicole Stiltner (Stephen), Krissy Howard, Nathaniel Boyce, Derick Maynard (Lily), George Maynard, James Dills, Rebecca Necessary (Jeremy); four great grandchildren, Gabriella, Destiny Stiltner, Landen Dills and Lenore Maynard; four step grandchildren, Kristen Houston (Isaac), Justin Gray, Ben Gray and William Gray; one step great grandson, Daniel Houston and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, March 29, at Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church.  Rev. David Crunkleton will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
