Roland’s section hike of Appalachian Trail a ‘spiritual journey’
When was the last time you walked in your faith? Marcia Roland of Macon County has every September for the past 14 years, as she section hiked the Appalachian Trail. Her inspiration came in 1992.
“The first time I’d ever backpacked was with Jeff (her younger son). We did the section from Dix Creek to Nantahala Outdoor Center and I was hooked by then. I remember looking at him and I said, ‘Someday, Jeff.’ We were up on Wesser Fire Tower, and I was having the happy tears. And he goes, ‘Oh Mom, you’re having a moment.’ I said ‘Yeah, but it’s a good one. These past four or five days have been amazing.
