Audrey Elizabeth Ashe

Audrey Elizabeth Ashe, 89, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Thedford “TT” Hurst and Auna May Hall Hurst.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Claude Ashe.

She is survived by her son, Charles Danny Ashe of Franklin; sister, Joyce Dean of Franklin; two granddaughters, Andrea Jones (Mike) and Rebecca Danielle Crowe (Julian); three great grandsons, Grayson Crowe, Kameron Jones, and Austin Crowe (Kenzie); two great-great granddaughters, Lauren Crowe and Kyleigh Jones; and one nephew, JR Dean.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 27, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Steve Reeves and Rev. Howard Southard officiated.  Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike Jones, Julian Crowe, Kameron Jones, Grayson Crowe, JR Dean, Ernie Watkins, and Austin Crowe.

Michael John Tedesco Sr.

Michael John Tedesco Sr., 70, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, March 24, 2019.

He served with the 101st Airborne during Vietnam flying Cobra Gunships from 1969-1970 and was a huge Beach Boys fan.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Henry ‘Jake’ Richard Beck Sr.

Henry “Jake” Richard Beck Sr., 81, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2019. He was born in Macon County Sept. 21, 1937, to the late Jim and Beulah Henry Beck. He worked for the Town of Highlands in the water department. He loved to make “Flower Pot Men” and sell them to all the people that came through Highlands and he loved to fish. He was well known and liked in the Town of Highlands. He was a hard worker, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his daughters, Roberta Ann Perkins of Highlands, N.C., and Diane Beck Crawford of Walhalla, S.C.; two grandchildren, Katrina Crawford and Matt Perkins; three brothers, Johnnie Beck, Sammie Beck, and Butch Beck. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Beck; a son, Henry Richard Beck Jr.; a grandchild, Henrietta Crawford; and two brothers, Gilbert Beck and Jimmy Beck. 

A graveside service was held Friday, March 22, at Highlands Memorial Park with Rev. Clyde Webb officiating.

Tommy A. Guest

Tommy A. Guest, 78, passed away Monday, March 25, 2019.  He was born in Macon County to the late J. Coley Guest and Nina P. Crisp Guest.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his companion, Nancy Cutchins; brothers, Edgar Guest, Clyde Guest, and John Lewis Guest; sisters, Edith Barnes and Inez Hurst.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, he had worked in a machine shop and was a member of Sugarfork Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sisters, Jeanne Woodard and Mattie Jo Hurst both of Franklin, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. 

A private burial will be held.

Victor Teague

Victor Teague

Victor Teague, 83, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late John Woodrow Teague and Ruth Ann Berry Teague.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Doug Teague. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, owner of Teague Dairy Farm for over 40 years, a member of the board of directors for Farm Bureau, and an active member and deacon of Higdonville Baptist Church.  He was an avid golfer who was active in his community and known as a generous giver.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Seay Teague of Franklin; children, Keith Teague (Julie) of Hayesville, Vicci Owens (Tom) of Hendersonville, Tim Teague (Alicia) of Franklin, and Kelli Tippett (Steve) of Franklin; sister, Konda Morrison of Buena Vista, Va.; six grandchildren, Cristin Owens Ratkowski (Brad), Preston Owens, Brooke Tippett, Amy Tippett, Savannah Teague, and Maranda Teague; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 23 in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Judson Hall, Rev. Gene Hawkins, and Larry Raby officiated.  Burial was in Higdonville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Andy Berry, Gary Taylor, Brian Taylor, Clinton Ledford, Sput Seay, and Jay Seay.

Honorary pallbearers were Fred Goldsmith, Pete Penland, and Jerry Sutton.

Elsie Passmore Holland, 90, of Franklin, N.C., went to her heavenly home, Jan. 15, 2019.

Clyde Howell Downs Jr.

Clyde Howell Downs Jr.

Clyde Howell Downs Jr., 70, of Franklin, N.C., and Raleigh, N.C., passed away Friday, March 22, 2019.

He was born in Franklin, in 1948 to the late Clyde Howell Downs Sr. and the late Ruby Jones Downs. He resided in Franklin until September 2016, when he moved to Raleigh.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 28 years, Judy Conley Downs; and his sister, Dwain Downs Imahara.

He is survived by his wife of two and a half years, Annette Swafford Busby Downs of Raleigh; his son, Clyde Howell Downs III (Amanda) of Franklin, his son, Jackie Lynn Downs of Franklin, and his daughter, Latresa Downs Shuler (William) of Bryson City; his step-son, Benjamin David Broadway of Raleigh; his step-daughter, Elizabeth Dove SanCartier of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; his sister, Emma Jean Taylor (Joe) of Franklin; his granddaughter, Avery Downs; one niece; four nephews; and one great nephew.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1968 and from Gardner Webb College with a degree in Business Administration.  He served in the National Guard for three years and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Franklin.

He retired from Duke Energy in 2014.  He also started and ran Downs Family Angus Farm, raising registered Angus cattle which he sold to farms and ranches all over the United States.

He was a member of Iotla Baptist Church, to which he dedicated much of his time keeping the grounds mowed.  He took much pride in making his church grounds look well-maintained.

He never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him.  He loved his wife and children and was always willing to help anyone in need.  He will be missed by his family and his friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 28, at 2 p.m., at Iotla Baptist Church.  Rev. Steve Reeves and Rev. Brandon Breedlove will officiate.  Burial will be in the Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Danny Cook, Allan Morgan, Charles Swafford, Karl Gillespie, Jim McConnell, Tony Norton, Ryan “Flash” Crawford, and Skip Sanders.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Young, Max Gladwell, Bob Guy, Wayne Brooks, Joe Taylor, Richard McClung, Greg Gardner, Mark Gardner, Johnny Brown, and Logan Gillespie.

Gloria Ann Stoddard, 85, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019.

Born in Middleboro, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Herbert Tripp and Florence Cappnello Tripp.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Elliott Stoddard and a daughter, Cynthia Lee Stoddard.  She enjoyed gardening, knitting, bird watching, and hiking.

She is survived by her son, Dana N. Stoddard of Franklin; brother, Herbert Tripp of Mass.; one grandchild, Lanh Hui Tamshiro of Bend, Ore.; and three great grandchildren.

Shirley Elizabeth Riley

Shirley Elizabeth Riley

Shirley Elizabeth Riley, 88, of Vancleave, Miss., and Stanfield, N.C., formerly of Otto, N.C., passed away Friday, March 22, 2019.

Born in New York, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William Rubin and Florence Jordan Rubin.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Samuel Riley.

She is survived by a son, John Scott Riley (Becky); daughters, Lynn Ann Moffitt (Randy) and Sharron Elizabeth Riley (Mike); grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Hunter and Jonathan.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 30, at 2 p.m.,, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Pastor James Sanders will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to Alzheimer’s Association, American Heart Association, American Lung Association or Hospice of Light (Ocean Springs, MS).

Douglas Stacey Keener

Douglas Stacey Keener, 70, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2019.  He was the son of Virgie Leo Keener of Highlands, N.C., and the late Henry Brownlow Keener.  He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving two tours in Vietnam.  He was a builder in the construction business.  He loved the outdoors,  fishing, gardening, wood working, and he liked to restore cars. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Beverly Keener, of Franklin; daughter, Judy Keener (Dominic) of Franklin; sons, Douglas Stacey Keener Jr. (Lisa) of Franklin, and Jason Johnson of Highlands; five granddaughters, four great-grandchildren;  two sisters, Caroline Winn (Terry) of Georgia and Marylee Simmons (Randal) of Highlands; half sisters, Melba Egan of Wilmington, Del., and Olive Todd of High Point, N.C.; and a brother, Grady Keener (Bev) of Ariz.

A Celebration of Life service will be held later in the spring.

Wayne Klimas

Wayne Klimas, 76, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, March 18, 2019.

Born in Tonawanda, N.Y., he was the son of the late Benedict Klimas and Kathryn C. Roth Klimas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Skip Klimas of New York and Greg Klimas of Florida. He was a master craftsman in woodworking and a handyman. He would give you the shirt off his back.

He is survived by his sister, Karen Scinta of Florida; step-daughter, Becky Sakowski of Franklin; two step-sons, Brian Lutes-Wilson of Tennessee, and David Lutes of Florida; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 4, at 4 p.m., at Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate.

Carol Anne Reeves

Carol Anne Reeves, a lifelong resident of Longview, Wash, died and went to heaven to be with Jesus on March 19, 2019. She was 84. She was born Nov. 23, 1934, to Ancel and Catherine (Pannell) Cutright.

She and her late husband, Bill, were active in Southern Baptist churches in the Longview area. They helped to start three churches: 20th Avenue Baptist Church (now Highlands Baptist Church); Cowlitz Way Baptist Church in Kelso; and Robert Gray Baptist Church. She was a quiet leader and a gentle servant, working with both youth and children’s ministries. She served on the church council at Robert Gray Baptist Church and was the church treasurer and//or clerk for about 50 years. She provided transportation to many people who wanted to attend services. If the church had an event or service, she was there to offer her time, energy, finances and prayer.

Although she stayed home with her children for several years, she worked at the Employment Security Department in Kelso assisting the unemployed as operations manager for 30 years, before retiring in 1991. When people had difficulty meeting their basic needs, she consistently found ways to help people find jobs, homes and other services. She was known to buy meals, provide a place to stay, help to find appropriate interview-ready clothing and was a model of integrity and hard work. Her staff at times referred to her as the “mom” of the office.

She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, reading and quilting. She was an awesome cook and loved to have big family dinners with everyone coming. Family reunions were a highlight of each summer and she enjoyed reading her Bible every night.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Linda Dowdle, formerly of Franklin, N.C.

She is survived by two brothers, Ed Cutright of Kelso and Guy “Butch” Bohannon (Geri) of Citrus Heights, Calif.; two sisters, Shirley Braun of Kelso and LaFon Warden (Ray) of Anderson Island, Wash.; a daughter, Janie (Reeves) Ray (Harlan) of Sandpoint, Idaho; two sons, Donald Reeves (Carol) of Corvallis, Ore., and Steve Reeves (Debbie) of Franklin, N.C.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and friends.

The family is grateful to the staffs of the Canterbury Inn and Community Health & Hospice, the Peace Health Dialysis team, and especially, Dr. Albert Luh, for their excellent care of Mrs. Reeves. She was grateful to have people who were caring and gentle.

A graveside service was held Saturday, March 23, at Longview Memorial Park, followed by a celebration of life at Robert Gray Baptist Church,  in Longview.

Kenneth Solomon

Kenneth Solomon, 68, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019.

Born in Tampa, Fla., he was the son of the late Horace Solomon Jr. and Tulan Cagle Solomon.

He is survived by Gunner, Greta, Johnson, Roscoe, and Chase, his beloved dogs who miss him dearly.  He is also survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart, Carolyn; son, John Garrett (Lisa); daughter, Charlene; and five grandchildren.

He was loved by all and will be remembered for his smile and kind and giving nature.

Kevin Neal Dills, 54 of Otto, N.C., passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019.  A native of Macon County, he is the son of Glen and Linda Dills.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Dills. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Amber Dills (James) of Franklin, Cory Dills (Madi) of Otto, Candace Caudelle (Anson) of Clarkesville, Ga., and Brandy Dills of the home; four grandchildren, Addie Dills, Caroline Watson, Benjamin Caudell and Cooper Caudell; his brother, Ronnie Dills (Carla) of Seneca, S.C.; a niece, Marcie Collins (Justin) of Columbia, S.C.

Odell Hodgin

The Lord called Daddy home Sunday, March 24, 2019.  Odell Hodgin, 91, of Franklin, N.C., was the son of the late Charlie Hodgin and Leona Byrd Hodgin.  He was married to the late Mary Ledford Hodgin who passed away Nov. 5, 2014.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Danny Hodgin; and two grandsons, Matthew Hodgin and Chris Hodgin.  He was an auto mechanic and had a knack for repairing things and getting them up and running again.

He is survived by two sons, Wayne Hodgin (Ruby) and Clifford Hodgin (Kathy) both of Franklin; three daughters, Diane Johnson (RV) of Sylva, Lynn Gregory (Terry) of Franklin, and Cathy Williams (Roger) of Franklin; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 28, at 3 p.m., in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Eddie Stillwell and Rev. Cale Stancil will officiate.  Burial will be in Hodgin Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 28, from 2 to 3 p.m.,  at Macon Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Justin Hodgin, Casey Hodgin, Bryant Hodgin, Dylan Cabe, Jeff Cabe, and Bruce Davis.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack Hodgin, Willie Hodgin, Bob Ledford, Johnny Hodgin, and Bart Hodgin.

John Robert Smith

John Smith

John Robert Smith, 76, went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2019.  He was born in Rabun County, Georgia, on May 18, 1942 to the late Lester and Izebell Smith.  

He was known as a loving family man.  He enjoyed planting a garden every year.  He enjoyed spending time fishing.  He could also be found at home reading a good western book.  He also liked western shows and movies and was an avid sports fan as well.  He attended Dryman’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Smith; two daughters, Lynn Burch (Rodney) of Franklin and Tina Wiggins (Jamie) of Otto; two grandchildren, Justin Burch (Alex) and Leann Burch; one great-grandchild, Kevin Burch; seven sisters, Llewllyn Thompson of Canton, Ga., Rosialee Page of Clayton, Ga., Hazel Talley (Randolph) of Mountain City, Ga., Reba Towe (Archie) of West Union, S.C., Bonnie Ammons (Sherill) of Sylva, N.C., Alice Tallent (Greg) of Johnson City, Tenn., Sue Wilkerson (Donnie) of Lakemont, Ga; three brothers, Cecil Smith, Jim Smith (Lynn)  and Tim Smith (Shelia) all of Clayton; a special niece, Diana Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Robert Kevin Smith; two sisters, Dorothy Bush and Linda Fay Smith; and two brothers, J.C. Smith and Lawrence Smith.
