Lonnie Cletus “Lonzo” Penland

Lonnie Cletus “Lonzo” Penland, 72, of Franklin, N.C., passed peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, with his loving daughter and granddaughter by his side. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late George Washington Penland and Anita Velma Holland Penland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Georgiana Penland Beach. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He enjoyed his friends and telling stories of his younger days as well as listening to country music and most anything his granddaughter played or would sing to him. You would most often find him in his rocking chair drinking his coffee. He never knew a stranger, nor turned away a friend when in need. He was one of a kind and known by many. He is survived by two daughters, Tracy Buttler and husband Joe of Oraville, Calif., and Amelia McCall Dowdle of Franklin; four grandchildren, Jeffery, Adam and Daniel Buttler all of Oraville, Calif., and Ashlynn Dowdle of Franklin; sister, Glenda Penland of Franklin; two brothers, Radford Penland and wife Sara and Terry Penland both of Franklin; six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Monday, Oct., in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Radford Penland officiated. Macon Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Frederick Frank Hinton Sr., 81, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2019. Born in San Diego, Calif., he was the son of the late Frederick C. Hinton and Lillian Mae Prairie Scarbrough.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Hinton and nine children. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran; member of First Alliance Church, Franklin Lions Club, American Legion Post 108, Disabled American Veterans and was an amateur radio operator. He is survived by daughter, Sherry June Hendrix (Walter) of Franklin; son, Frederick Frank Hinton, Jr of Montana; two sisters, Toni Martinez of Baja, Calif., and Sharon Mullenux of Bend, Ore.; brother, John Burt Scarbrough Jr. of Anaheim, Calif.; three granddaughters; three great grandsons; one great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Boyd Teem Boyd Teem

Boyd Teem Boyd Teem, 91, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Alfred Teem and Annie Frady Teem.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Bruce Wayne Teem. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was a member of Sugarfork Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by three children, Vic Teem (Sherry) of Lincolnton, Ala., Anita Lewis of Newborn, Ga., and Tracy Rowland of Franklin; sister, Eloise Smith of Snellville, Ga.; brother, Harold Teem of Waterloo, Iowa; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral service was held Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Steve Reeves officiated.  Burial was in the Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108. Pallbearers were Donnie Moses, Ricky Moses, Tim Higdon, Heath Higdon, Jordan Moses and Denver Higdon.  Honorary pallbearer was Bud Moses. Lee ‘Ed’ Edward Gregory

Lee “Ed” Edward Gregory, 82, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2019.  He was born in Macon County, North Carolina, Dec. 31, 1936, to the late Roy and Dalene Hunnicut Gregory.  He retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service, where he was a mechanic. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and  Korea. He was stationed in  France,  Germany and many places across the United States.  He was a member of Higdonville Baptist Church, a member of American Legion Post 108, VFW Post 7339 and Vietnam Veteran of America Post 994, and the Funeral Honor Guard for many years. He loved mechanics and rebuilt and restored his mobile  home. Survivors include his wife of 59 1/2 years, Francoise Gregory; daughter, Brenda Lee Holt (Bob) of Franklin; son, James E. Gregory (Gary Smith) of Knoxville, Tenn.; granddaughter, Samantha Huisenga (Dustin) of Ft. Myers, Fla.; great-grandson, Parker Huisenga; sisters, Shirley Loftin of Florida and Diane Cernan of Ohio; brothers, Bruce Gregory (Sherry) and James Gregory (Karen) of Michigan. HE was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Soderberg. A military graveside service was held Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. Bud Haire officiating. Dewey ‘Corky’ Elliott Sr.

Dewey “Corky” Elliott Sr., 88, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Wiley Elliott and Lillian Agnes Pannell Elliott. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Estelleen Keener Elliott. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served with the 82nd Airborne during the Korean conflict.  He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his children, Joy Rosser (Mike) of Franklin, Dewey “Corky” Elliott Jr. (Lynda) of Franklin, and Dewann Hamilton (Kevin) of Franklin; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brother, Edward Elliott of Inman, S.C.; step-sister, Irene Cowan; step-brothers, Truman Elliott, McArthur Elliott, and Corie Elliott; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held Sunday, Oct. 6, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Richard Salmonson and Rev. David Williams officiated. Burial was in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. William David Collier

William David Collier, 62, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019. Born in Marietta, Ga., he was raised in Franklin by the late Roy and Mary Greenwood Collier. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was an avid Clemson fan and golfer. He was also the “best Poppy in the world.” Surviving are his wife, Tracy Fitzgerald Collier; children, Chris Collier (Melissa), Zack Caulder (Heather), Austin Caulder; grandson, Brayden; siblings, Marilyn Roper (CB), Linda Campbell (Fred), Mildred Broad, Doug Welch (Irene), Roy Duane Collier (Carolyn), Phoebe Hastings (Mark); furbabies, Dixie Rose and Jayce; granddogs, Arya, Oaklynn, Cowboy; and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service was held Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Lakeview Baptist. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Franklin, N.C. Mildred Angel Tyler, 95, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Lex B. Angel and Candus E. Gibson Angel.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Richard Tyler; and two brothers, Lex and JD. She is survived by her son, Mike Holt and wife Sandy of Asheville; one grandson, Zachary Michael Holt; two granddaughters, Diana Michels and April Bradford; three great grandchildren, Colee, Kristian and Braydon; sisters, Grace Poindexter and Maude Breedlove; and brother, Bob Angel. Furman Angel Jr., 81, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2019. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Dr. Furman Angel and Louise Setser Angel. He retired from Macon County Schools where he worked as a mechanic for 27 years.  He was a member of Mulberry United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anita Norton Angel; son, Furman Angel (Molly) of Fletcher, N.C.; and two grandsons, Grant Angel and Zac Angel. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m., in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Betty Ann Banks Lapiere, 76, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019. She was born June 10, 1943, to the late Luther Banks and Letha Rochelle Banks in Onslow County, N.C. She worked in the textile industry as a machine operator at Fruit of the Loom. Cooking, oysters, gardening and bowling was a love of hers and she enjoyed decorating her kitchen in a rooster theme. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her daughters, Kathy Kelly (Chuck) of Otto, N.C., Eugenio Rodriquez (Neisa) of Ft. Myers, Fla., Renee Roberts of Jacksonville, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Michelle Tordoff of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Linda Spencer of Franklin and Janice Decker of Jacksonville; two brothers, Jerry Banks of Dothan, Ala. and Jim Banks of Greensboro, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Lapiere; a son, Russell Tordoff; a brother, Bill Banks; a grandson, Michael Velasco; and a great grandchild, Riley Penniman.
