Nantahala Hiking Club presents “Slippery Salamanders of the Southern Appalachians” with Jason Love, associate director of Highlands Biological Station on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m., at the Macon County Public Library. Did you know that WNC is the salamander capital of the world? All are welcome.

Graduation at Adult and Teen Challenge of the Smokies Men’s Center will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, 10 a.m., at 336 Living Hope Way, Franklin. Franklin Seventh Day Adventist is discontinuing its Community Service Outreach Program at 93 Church Street, Suite 203.   

Macon Early College (MEC) is accepting student enrollment applications for the 2023-24 school year.  MEC serves grades ninth through 13 and is fully integrated into the Southwestern Community College system. Students have the opportunity to graduate in four or five years with a high school diploma and a two-year Associate’s degree with transferable credits to a four-year university.  Applications are available at under the Parent Information tab. The deadline to submit an application for rising 9th graders is Feb. 17, 2023, and for rising 10th and 11th grade students the deadline is March 17, 2023. Macon Chips, Franklin’s Wood Carving Club meets on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Macon County Public Library and on Thursdays, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Franklin High School Wood Shop just off McCollum Drive. Franklin Alcoholics Anonymous “Open Meetings” are for anyone who thinks they may have a drinking problem or for anyone interested in the A.A. recovery program. Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as  strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter Telephone Support Group for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia is designed to provide caregivers opportunities for sharing, education, and support through a telephone conference. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.
