Guild presents Quilts of Valor to veterans

The Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild presented Quilts of Valor to veterans last month at the American Legion Post 108. The Quilts of Valor was the vision of Catherine Roberts when her son Nat came home from Iraq in 2003. It became her mission to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting, healing Quilts of Valor. Since 2003, 231,000 quilts have been presented nationally. The Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild have presented 1,149 of them. With their quilt every veteran is given a letter thanking them for their service. Pictured with their quilts are (front row L-R) Terrie Vernon, Leon Carpenter, William Carpenter, Sherry Newton; (back row, L-R) Gary Vernon, Ronald Cooper, Joseph Lebue, Herman Elkins and Jerry Smith.
