The truth no longer matters “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” – Mark Twain.  Mark Twain never really said this, but most people believe he did. Attributing this quote to him has become an alternative fact. It you tell a lie often enough it becomes the “truth.”  Dictators, advertisers, phony religious leaders, and politicians have all known that the “truth” is what they want it to be. All they have to do is keep repeating their alternative fact loud and often enough and it will fly around the world long before the truth ever catches up. We now live in a world of alternative facts. Donald Trump has spent his whole professional life mastering the art of alternative facts, and he is a master at it. Through his many divorces, adulteries, bankruptcies, failed  businesses, and hundreds of law suits against him, he always proclaims himself a “winner.” He calls this twisting of facts “Truthful Hyperbole.”  The real truth never seems to catch up with him. Here are  just a few examples of the “truth” by  Donald Trump: Obama bugged Trump Tower; I had the biggest inauguration crowd; Hillary Clinton won the popular vote because of fraud; Michael Flynn did not do anything wrong; Americans pay the most in taxes; Tax reform will cost me a fortune; there is substantial evidence of voter fraud; the FBI spied on my campaign; and I have signed more legislation than any president. Even though every one of these claims have been disproven by actual  facts, no one noticed. We have all heard  Trump say that the Russia investigation is a witch hunt, so what are the facts?  “In the nine months since Robert S. Mueller III was appointed to oversee the investigation into possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, he has issued more than 100 criminal counts against 19 people and three companies. Of the 19 people, five — including three Trump associates — have pleaded guilty. Thirteen are Russians accused of meddling in the 2016 presidential election.” (nytimes.com/2018/02/23/ )   If the investigation  is a witch hunt than there are a lot of  witches who speak Russian. If you are host of “The Apprentice” or a circus ringmaster,  you are expected to create a entertaining world of unreality. If you are the president of the United States, your words have power and consequences. The president’s need to create his own truth has alarmed our allies and encouraged dictators around the world.  I have to believe that his most ardent followers have decided  that the end justifies the means and that the truth no longer matters.  Louis Vitale – Franklin, N.C.

School shootings a problem that needs solving As time goes on, it has become clear that politics has never been able to solve problems and if anything, often make things a lot worse. Just look at the damage LBJ’s “Great New Society” did to Black America’s self-image. Perhaps a noble idea but lacking in understanding of human nature. Fearing civil war amongst Americans at some future date, perhaps after the Democrats manage to bring Socialism to America, they continually bemoan the problem with guns. Pretending to be horrified by the school shootings we’ve seen in recent years, they are in reality rooting for more because it keeps gun control in the debate. Let’s face it, Democrats, for whatever reason, want Americans disarmed. Could be that a few years of Socialism would bring about a civil war once Americans realized their freedom went out the door. Besides, if Democrats really cared, why is it that they want illegal drugs to keep flowing across our open borders and killing 115 Americans per day? But let’s take a closer look at the school shootings of recent years. First of all, there have always been school shootings dating back to the 1700s. There was, however, a big difference and that was such events never made worldwide headlines. The bad guys were put in jail and that was all we heard about it. In those days the bad guy didn’t get to appear on national television and make the headlines of all the newspapers in the world. But now they get instantaneous celebrity equal to any Hollywood movie star. In young and immature minds, they are willing to trade life in prison to get even with the world sometimes for reasons as trivial as failing an exam. In some instances, there is evidence that suggest these young bad guys are missing activity in their prefrontal cortex which is where one feels empathy for others. The only way this can be fixed is to do an MRI on each and every kid which civil rights groups would fight tooth and nail. Somehow, logic and critical thinking has failed them. We need to stop kidding ourselves because the reality is that had the kid in Texas not seen all the publicity the kid in Parkland got, the idea would never have popped into his sick head. Putting it bluntly, almost all of these school shootings have been copy cats. They saw the story on television and thought what a great way to gain the attention I need. So what’s the answer? Do we censor the media? Obviously, if they don’t get the media attention we give them now, it would stop much of the problem. That would be a start but no doubt there is much more to it than that. We need to keep politics out of it and work to solve the problem.” For once, can’t we cut all the political clap trap and solve the problem? Bob Wilson – Franklin, N.C.

A good education begins and continues with the truth “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities- His eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God, nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images. . .” (Romans 1:18-23a) Education can give you the tools to find the truth, but it does not necessarily give you the truth. If you begin your search for the truth anywhere other than with God, you are doomed to fail. The largest industry in the world today is the suppression of truth. Imagine that through your education, you have been given a giant jigsaw puzzle titled “the Truth.” Inside are thousands of pieces. If you were able to assemble it correctly, you would have a clear picture of what is really going on in the world. But unfortunately, the box has been tampered with. Hundreds of pieces have been removed and replaced with pieces from another box labeled “lies.” Many today realize that they are being lied to. But it is often very difficult to distinguish between lies and the truth. The trouble with education today is that it often does not begin with God and His Word, the Bible. Romans 3:4 says “Let God be true, and every man a liar.” The Bible is not flattering with its description of human nature. We read, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can understand it? “(Jeremiah 17:9) The idea that people are basically good is not found in the Bible. Because man is evil by nature, we should expect that much of what we hear from the mainstream media is lies and distortions, and that they are not reporting what is true or important. This is because the owners and controllers of nearly all the major sources of information have a vested interest in suppression of the truth. Why? Because if the truth they are hiding became widely known, they would lose their power and control (and your votes). They would no longer be able to enslave you by controlling your thoughts (and your votes). This is why it is not easy to find out the truth. But there is hope! Jesus said, “Sanctify them through the truth: your Word is truth.” (John 17:17) Since the Bible is God’s Word to His creatures (us), we do well to begin, and continue our education with a thorough study of the Bible. I suggest beginning with the Gospel of John, if the Bible is new to you, because it is easy to understand, and introduces you to the most important person in all history, Jesus. He said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) Jesus also said, “Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread which comes down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I give for the life of the world.” (John 6:49-51) And Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26) Do you believe this? Ed Hill – Franklin, N.C.
