Check out reliable sources for scientific information

In a recent letter to the editor, the author attempts to “prove” that there is no climate change crisis.  The author assumes that the rest of us residents of Macon County are sufficiently ignorant so as to believe his mish-mash of referenced data.

To start, the referenced web sites, www.geoengineeringwatch.org and www.realclimatescience.com are not reliable sources for scientific information. These sites are filled with misinformation, unreliable or misinterpreted data, unsubstantiated conclusions, and outright conspiracy theories (my favorite is that the contrails from jet aircraft are purposely manipulated so to have an insidious effect on human health.)

Rather, I suggest that readers reference the scientific research that is based on well-established scientific methods and by well-regarded, bonafide scientists (publishing organizations listed below.)  I hope this newspaper’s readers who interested in finding out whether or not human activities have increased the rate of climate change will take the time to look at the websites of these organizations:

– American Association for the Advancement of Science: “Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring… greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are the primary driver. This conclusion is based on multiple independent lines of evidence and the vast body of peer-reviewed science.”

– American Chemical Society: “The Earth’s climate is changing in response to increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and particulate matter in the atmosphere, largely as the result of human activities.”

– American Geophysical Union: “Extensive, independent observations confirm the reality of global warming. … The changes are inconsistent with explanations of climate change that rely on known natural influences.”

– American Meteorological Society: “It is clear from extensive scientific evidence that the dominant cause of the rapid change in climate of the past half century is human-induced increases in the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases…”

– American Physical Society: “While natural sources of climate variability are significant, multiple lines of evidence indicate that human influences have had an increasingly dominant effect on global climate warming observed since the mid-20th century.”

– Geological Society of America: “Scientific advances have greatly reduced previous uncertainties about recent global warming.”

– Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: “Human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent anthropogenic emissions of green-house gases are the highest in history.”

– U.S. Global Change Research Program: “Based on extensive evidence, … it is extremely likely that human activities, especially emissions of greenhouse gases, are the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.”

– U.S. National Academy of Sciences: “The scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to begin taking steps to prepare for climate change and to slow it.”

– Department of Defense: “The effects of a changing climate are a national security issue with potential impacts to Department of Defense missions, operational plans, and installations.”

Trump clan benefiting from doing business abroad

Calling the kettle black! Seems Donald Trump and his sons call Hunter Biden corrupt for doing business abroad. The entire Trump clan including the president himself are making millions on trading on Donald Trump’s position of power. Eric and Donald Jr. are promoting the Trump businesses in countries Turkey, Philippines, India. Daughter Ivanka met with Chinese president Xi Jinping with her father in 2017 that same day China granted her preliminary trade mark for her jewelry and handbags worth millions of dollars. Ivanka’s husband Jared Kushner serves as a White House senior advisor while continuing to profit from a large amount of businesses abroad. Donald Trump is paid millions by foreign governments and U.S. corporations to stay at his properties, even as he refuses to release his tax returns. Why is this not investigated which he says is illegal. He thinks he’s above the law. If the Trump family really care about corruption abroad they should welcome a congressional investigation into their activities as Hunter Biden did. Somehow, some way, he will find a way to blame it all on Obama, like he always does. What has happen to the American people that they support a president that thinks it OK for foreign countries to run our election that has always been a special freedom. I bet Pres. George Washington and Abe Lincoln are turning over in their graves. What’s happen to our American values. Let’s keep this our country.

Calculation of who to vote for can be complicated

A recent letter writer, after expounding on his disdain for the President, asserted that there is a moral stain on those who continue to support him.

First some background. President Trump was not my first choice. Being from Texas I voted for Senator Cruz in the primaries. In the beginning I was not a fan of Trump as a presidential candidate. In the general election I was confronted with a choice of two candidates neither being my first choice.

One candidate was so morally flawed as to be totally unacceptable to me. She was without a moral compass; having sold the influence of her office of Secretary of State for hard cash. (See Clinton Foundation). She leaked classified material through her use of a private email server and then destroyed and hid evidence of her lawlessness. She was responsible for 4 deaths in Benghazi. Her misguided policy proposals aside, she was simply morally unfit and unqualified to be president.

The democrat nominee for 2020 though likely not to have her absolute and total moral disqualification will push policies that I find repugnant: government run health care, carbon taxes to essentially take over private business, free childcare, open borders and firearm confiscation. Mandatory paid leave and 15$/hr. minimum wage will be imposed on employers. Employers in Macon County cannot afford and should not be forced to pay every employee $31,000 per year! And that doesn’t include the additional benefits you will be forced to provide. If you are a business owner consider that when you vote.

However, more fundamental to my objections to the soon to be named democrat nominee is that like the West, the democratic party has lost its grip on reality and rejects science. In fact, they are leading a revolt against both. There is no longer male and female as reality dictates and science recognizes. Now there is “gender fluidity”. Plastic surgery has been pushed to radically absurd limits and now a man can surgically and chemically be mutilated into what is called a woman. Reality be damned! A seven-year-old boy in Texas is currently in danger of having this process initiated on him by force.

But the ultimate deal breaker for me is the refusal of the democrat party to recognize fundamental concepts of individual rights and freedoms as set forth in this country’s founding documents. A baby is now considered “pregnancy tissue” so long as it has not completely exited the birth canal and as such can be executed. And I think we all know to the abortion worshippers the “birth canal” limit is an arbitrary and temporary obstacle to infanticide once they pack the Supreme Court. Without the right to life there are no other rights. Science be damned!

I do believe the calculation an individual makes in deciding to cast their vote can be complicated. But if there is a moral stain to be smeared on any voter it would be on those who continually support morally impaired candidates who back forced gender reassignment on children and infanticide. There is no stain on voters who possess a reasoned skepticism of “climate change” and the green new deal takeover of the economy. I presume President Trump will be up for re-election. I will vote for him without qualm or reservation.

Take steps to prevent outbreak of Parvo

Due to the recent and ongoing outbreaks of Parvo I would like to share some information with our Macon County residents.

Since the late 1970s and early 1980s dogs have been at risk of getting the parvo virus. The incubation period once a dog has been exposed is 3-11 days. This  is when you would start to see symptoms.

What are the symptoms?  In the beginning a fever and lethargy.  That will progress quickly to vomiting, diarrhea and then bloody diarrhea. This escalates to more problems such as dehydration, nausea, cramping and pain.  The pain is due to secondary bacteria sepsis which is blood poisoning. This happens when the intestinal bacteria gets in the circulatory system. At this point intravenous fluids are required to give the dog or puppy electrolytes, nausea,  pain medication, regulation and antibiotics.  Sadly this does not always work and may result in death.

So, how can this be prevented? First make sure your puppy is vaccinated for this and other diseases. All dogs are exposed to this virus but puppies are the more susceptible. If your adult dogs are properly vaccinated this is usually not a problem. Vaccines should start from six weeks to 15 weeks at three-week intervals. During this time do not take your puppy to public places or to visit with other dogs. There is plenty of time for socialization.  Do not let your puppy or dog roam.  This virus is spread by other dogs and animals including birds. It can live in the ground a number of years.  If you are not sure if you have had parvo in your yard keep your puppy inside until it has completed all vaccines. Buy lots of puppy pads!

What can you do to help?  Get your pets vaccinated.  Keep them home where they are safe not only from cars but other animals and disease that is easily spread. Please spay or neuter your pets. Limiting the over population of unwanted  pets who are abandonded and left to fend for themselves will help keep the disease down. Please call Appalachian Animal Rescue Center (828)524-4588 to ask about their low cost spay and neuter program.

Our shelter is closed again for at least one week, possibly longer due to another parvo outbreak.  Right now we have one positive dog who is being treated by Rabun Animal Hospital.  Where did it come from? A scared litttle dog we took in.  She seemed okay except for hiding in the corner which is normal for abandoned dogs.  The next day the symptoms were very apparent. We are now disinfecting the entire shelter with bleach and san-o-21 which is an anti viral cleaner.  This means from top to bottom and in between, all crevices, cracks, wheels on the desk chairs, etc. to kill the virus. Thank you to our board members and volunteers who are helping our staff with this deep clean process.  It isn’t pleasant. Being closed means no adoptions and no intakes of cats or dogs.  When you are a no kill shelter this means you do not euthanize for space or put a time limit on any animals.  It also means you have an ongoing Veterinary bill because you do what is necessary to save the animal’s life. We do our best to raise money as we have a very limited budget.

We are in need of blankets, towels and sheets.  We are washing with hot water and bleach and throwing anything way anything that is heavily soiled as a precaution.  We are spraying the driveway and grassy areas as we have dogs walked three times a week.  If your pets are up to date with inocculations it is safe for you to come to the door but if you prefer just blow your horn and we will meet you outside.

I would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Stephen Arbitter from Rabun Animal Hospital for sharing his knowledge with me so I could write a factual article that hopefully will save some lives.

What are children learning from Graham and Trump?

Franklin Graham may have talked politics and religion with his father, Billy. But, where did get his neo-Christianity from? Franklin seems to be promoting lying, belittling women, bullying and calling people scum.

Should we ignore Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV? It states, “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”

So, what are our impressionable young children learning from Donald Trump and Franklin Graham? Will they look up to this president and admire his tendency to pursue the things that he wants regardless of how he decides to obtain them?

Have you decided whether you want that “Old-time religion” or Franklin Graham’s new-fangled neo-Christianity?
