New parking pattern will be introduced next week

The Town of Franklin will begin a new 90-day trial of a new one block long parking plan for Main Street from the Town Hall to the Town Square beginning on March 26, depending on the weather.

Using a temporary type of parking tape and signage, Town Planner Justin Setser and Town Engineer Nathanael Moore will lay out the new parking scheme which will keep angled parking on the left side of Main Street but change to parallel parking on the right side.

Town Council voted to try a new plan after fielding complaints and suggestions from merchants, visitors and residents.

Town officials hope the public will respond to the new plan and let them know if they like it or not.

“We hope that people will let us know their thoughts on the plan and how it’s working,” according to Setser.

Comments can be emailed to, call Town Hall at (828)524-2516 and by filling out a comment form from the front desk of Town Hall.

Following the temporary tests and how the public responds, there may be other changes to the town’s parking. During the initial test, there will be additional loading zones put in place. Town Council members believe that testing the plan would be “a better step than going to a permanent change and then having to redo it.”
