Alice Merrick

Alice Merrick, 64, of Otto, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016.

Born in New Orleans, La., she was the daughter of the late Herman Leiser and Rosalie Famularo.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Herman “Buddy” Leiser. She was retired from Bell South and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Wayne Merrick; four children, Christine Kennedy of Boonville, Miss., Veronica Brown of St. Rose, La., Melissa McNaughton of Slidell, La., and Wayne Merrick II of Ama, La.; three sisters, Mary Jane Clutterbuck of Kenner, La., Rose Ann Annis of Pearl River, La., and Nancy Kreiter of Jefferson, La.; brother, Lawrence Leiser of Violet, La.; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be held at a later date in Louisiana.

Dale Caldwell Parrott, 67, of Franklin, N.C., died in Buncombe County, North Carolina, Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016. He was born in Arlington, Va., in 1949. He was a 1967 graduate of J.E.B. Stuart High School, Va., and received his BS in 1972 in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Va. His professional career lasted nearly 40 years as an engineer within the nuclear and power industry. His talents were varied and many. He was an avid outdoors enthusiast, enjoyed running, hiking, mountain and road biking, caving, mountain climbing, and camping. He was an accomplished theater organist and member of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society. When he and his wife Susan retired to Franklin, he brought a lifetime of experiences to building a beautiful retirement home in the mountains and was always outside working on landscaping projects and improvements.

Preceded in death by his mother Helen Caldwell Parrott, he is survived by his father, Harold Sylvester Parrott of Springfield, Va.; his wife of 30 years, Susan B. Parrott; children, Jason Dale Parrott of Portland, Ore.; Suzanne Leigh Myrick and husband Jacob Myrick of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Quay William III and wife Amy Parrott of Waynesboro, Va.; Elizabeth Halsey Parrott of Nashville, Tenn.; and John Curtis Parrott of Staunton, Va.; and grandchildren, Quay William IV, Robert Sampson, John Mechler and Marguerite Kessel Parrott of Waynesboro, Va.; Collin Michael Parrott of Concord, N.C.; Eleanor and Benjamin Myrick of Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 13, at All Saints Episcopal Church, Franklin, with the Rev. Fred Lindstrom officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to All Saints Episcopal Church, (allsaintsfranklin.org), the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theater Organ Society (atosatlanta.org) or the Southern Off-road Bicycle Association Central Savannah River Area (SORBAcsra.org).

Beverly Ann Bryson Sykes, 75, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016. She was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Wiley and Helen Rowland Bryson. She was married to G.P. Sykes, Jr. who preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 2010.  She had worked for the Department of Social Services and was a member of Franklin First Baptist Church.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

She is survived by her daughter, Sheri Dockery (Jeff) of Franklin; step daughters, Gina Elowe (Wayne) and Beth Taylor (Jimi) all of Atlanta, Ga.; her brother, Bruce Bryson (Sue) of Franklin; five grandchildren; five step grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Aug. 17, in the chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Reeves and Rev. Guy Duvall officiating.  Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Josh Dockery, Jeremy Dockery, Kenny Bays, Jeff Southard, Jimi Taylor and Mike Ferguson served as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Bldg. One, Asheville, NC  28801.

Katherine Dayton Davis, 86, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016.  She was born in Clay County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Grover and Maude Kirby Dayton.  She was married to the late William Garrett Davis.  She was a homemaker and a member of Cartoogechaye Baptist Church, where she was active in Sunday School and Bible School. She was a doll collector, served as a volunteer at the Banquet Table, and enjoyed going to the Senior Center.

She is survived by a daughter, Jearlene Talley (Cliff) of Highlands, N.C.; son, William Garrett Davis Jr. (Pat) of Franklin; sister, Nancy McDowell (Clinton) of Newborn, Ga., grandchildren, Will Davis, Niki Bloedow (Steven); great grandchildren, Coby and Colson Bloedow.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ethelene Smith and two brothers, J. D. Dayton and Clarence Dayton.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 17, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Brian Southard and Rev. Steve Reeves officiating.  Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Will Davis, Michael McDowell, David Anderson, Dennis Reese, Tim Brackett and Jerry Anderson.

Peggy Walker

Peggy Walker, 71, of Rabun Gap, Ga., passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2016.

Born in Cordele, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Marvin Walker and Elma Causey Walker. She retired from the Dougherty County School System, Albany, Ga., after 34 years as a school teacher.

She is survived by her sister, Marvilyn Blasingame and husband Sam of Franklin; niece, Katie Bowen and husband Scott; nephew, Kane Blasingame and wife Brooke; great nephew, Walker Bowen and great niece, Mackenzie Bowen.

At her request, no services are planned.

Robert J. Trafford

Robert J. Trafford, 90, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016.

Born in Lake Worth, Fla., he was the son of the late Arthur Alfred Trafford and Jean Barbara Trafford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Trafford and one sister, Jean Heselton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during World War II. He was a founding member of the Kiwanis Club in Franklin and member of First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by three children, Karen Noeth of Franklin, T. Neal Trafford and wife Donna of Tallahassee, Fla., and Bruce F. Trafford and wife Mary Jo of Owens Cross Roads, Ala.; two sisters, Barbara Pearson of Moultrie, Ga., and Margaret Stuart of West Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; one great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Memorial Gardens at First Presbyterian Church.

Waverly Lee Reddish

Waverly Lee Reddish, 78, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Aug. 15, 2016. He was born in High Point, N.C., the son of the late Cora Idell Colbert and LeRoy Reddish. He was retired from the City of Highlands. He loved and enjoyed his family; was a sports enthusiast, and enjoyed blue grass music.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Kirkland Reddish; daughters, Cynthia Gregory (Jackie) of Franklin, Susan Tupper (Steve) of Kuna, Idaho, Beverly Allen (Phillip) of Hayesville, N.C., and son, James Reddish (Gloria) of Whittier, N.C.; grandchildren, Kristina Gonzalez, Jessica Bradley, Deanna Bandy, Derek Kendall, Alex Kendall, Karen Reddish, Skyler Fraizer and Natalie Bradley; brother, Aaron Reddish of Highpoint, N.C., and sister, Frances Ennis of Sinton, Texas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Reddish and sisters, Melrose Hill and Lilly Reddish; brothers, Arcele Reddish, Elvin Reddish and Alton Reddish.

A funeral service was held Friday, Aug. 19, in the chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Bobby Crawford and Lee Russell officiating. Burial followed in Carson Cemetery. Pallbearers were Alex Kendall, Derek Kendall, David Russell, Dale McMahan, Gary Kirkland and Gene Ramey.
