Thomas Willis ‘Bill’ Neal

Thomas Willis “Bill” Neal, 95, passed away Dec. 10, 2017, in Franklin, N.C.

He was born in Hiawassee, Ga., to the late Thomas Norris and Callie Kimsey Neal. He served in the U. S. Army Air Forces during WWII. Formerly of Canton, he and his wife moved to Franklin following his retirement from Champion International Corp. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and craftsman. He loved to travel with his wife in their RV and he never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Ruby McLemore Neal; brothers: Clay, Blain, Fain (Shorty), Maurice and Charles; and sisters: Blon Grogan and Ruth O’Dear.

He is survived by his four children, Gary Neal of Waynesville, N.C., (Takiko, deceased), Marcia Davis of Asheville, N.C., Krista Haynes of Athens, Ga., and Keith Neal of Franklin, (Janet, deceased); his sisters, Nell Thompson and Alice Donaldson; three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Wells Funeral Home in Canton at a later date.

Harry Richard Conley

Harry Richard Conley, 65, of Garner, N.C., passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Harry Edwin Conley and Mary Patricia Holland Conley.  He was retired from the NCDOT; was an avid gun and knife collector and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by a brother, Bruce Conley (Sherry) of Franklin; a sister, Rebecca DeMore (Richard) of Demorest, Ga.; a nephew, Justin K. Conley of Charlotte, N.C., and many close friends.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, Dec. 20, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Steve Reeves officiated.  Burial was in the Carson Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Pete Shope, Fred Shope, Junior Patton, Randy Tallent, Dean Austin Dodge, Calvin Conley, Dennis Conley, Mike Breedlove and Brian Sellers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jim Cunningham and members of the NCDOT Geo Tech Division.

Melody Ledford Pendergrass

Melody Ledford Pendergrass, 67, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2017.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Vester A. Ledford and Donna Marshall Ledford.  She worked at Sunset restaurant and was a member of Windy Gap Baptist Church. She enjoyed collecting pottery and was a fan of the classic “Gone with the Wind.”

She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Charles Robert Pendergrass; two daughters, Darlene Asher (Brian) of Franklin, and Scarlett Moncus (Tracy) of Valley, Ala.; sister, Jackye Wilson of Franklin; brother, Steve Ledford of Franklin; two grandchildren, Chantelle Rondel and Dylan Moncus; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 22, at 4 p.m., in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Mark Bishop will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dylan Moncus, Joey Wilson, Grant Hoffner, Nathan Gibson and Wyatt Gibson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Applachian Animal Rescue, 851 Lake Emory Road, Franklin, NC  28734.

Kenneth Browning

Kenneth Browning, 76, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Austin Newton Browning and Vinnie Hunnicutt Browning. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Regina Faith Browning and three sisters, Katherine Walkingstick, Margaret Hyde, Helen Sutton and a brother, Fred Browning. He was retired from the Macon County School System and was a member of Cowee Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Jean Webb Browning; three daughters, Jennifer Browning Sherrod and husband Ronnie, Jeania Browning Teague and husband Kelly and Linda Nell Browning; four grandchildren, Gage Hudson Sherrod, Breanna Teague and fiancé Malcom Cail, Ethan Teague and Kenneth Dawson Browning; a sister, Lynda York of Franklin and special friend, Peggy Hannah.

Funeral service will be held  Thursday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m., in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Jason Smith, Rev. Ronnie Branson and Rev. Eddie Stillwell will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ethan Teague, Dawson Browning, Ronnie Sherrod, Kelly Teague, Malcom Cail and Gage Sherrod.

Janice Reynolds Dowdle

Janice Reynolds Dowdle

Janice Reynolds Dowdle, 89, of Otto, N.C., passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017.

Born in Macon County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Harley Reynolds and Ora Curtis Reynolds Castle.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Joe Anderson and Clarence “Shorty” Dowdle; son, Larry Anderson and a brother, R.L. Reynolds. She worked for more than 20 years at the Clayton Shirt Factory as a supervisor and owned Jan’s Antiques and Thrift Shop for many years.  She was an active member of Otto Community Development where she was once recognized as Woman of the Year for Macon County; was involved with the Otto Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a member of the Coweeta Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughter, Brenda Anderson York of Oxford, Ga.; son, JC Anderson (Wilma) of Otto; step-daughter, Bessie Dowdle Taylor; grandchildren, Tammy Holland (Brian), Gina York; Mia Overton (Tom), Andrea, Tye and Colby Anderson; step-granddaughters, Donna, Lisa and Tammy Taylor; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; sister, Geneva Carpenter and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, Dec. 20, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Brian Holland officiated.  Graveside service was held at the Coweeta Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Bud Haire officiating.

Memorial donations can be made to the Otto Volunteer Fire Dept, 60 Firehouse Road, Otto, NC  28763.

Pallbearers were Colby Anderson, Christopher Holland, Matthew Holland, Joshua Holland, Nathaniel Holland, Blake Henderson, Cody Clark and Ronnie Castle.

Harold ‘Irwin’ Price

Harold ‘Irwin’ Price

Harold “Irwin” Price, 94, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at Macon Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Roby Price and brother, Otho Price.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Minor Price.  They were married for 62 wonderful years. He was a member of Walnut Creek Baptist Church and had served as a trustee, treasurer and member of the Budget Committee. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 aboard the USS Block Island and USS Franklin.  He was employed by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, now CSX, for 30 years in Norfolk and Richmond, Va., and Jacksonville, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at Walnut Creek Baptist Church, Jan. 7, at 1 p.m., with Rev. Mike Wilson presiding.

William A. ‘Bill’ Whiteside

William A. ‘Bill’ Whiteside

William A. “Bill” Whiteside, 92, of Cashiers, N.C., passed away early Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Bradenton, Fla., the son of the late Cecil and Fannie Whiteside. He proudly served his country as a Marine in World War II stationed in the Philippines. Upon returning pursued a career in art receiving a Masters of Fine Art degree from Florida State University. For many years he taught art, with George W. Bush as one of his notable students, and had several paintings inducted into the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. He owned and operated the Whiteside Art Gallery in Cashiers for 40 years.  Many loved that he chose to repurpose the old Cashiers Baptist Church into his Art Gallery. He loved to share God’s beauty through his realistic landscapes, so others could see the beauty that he did.  Mr. and Mrs. Whiteside loved to help others in their community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Whiteside, who died in 2014, a son, William Albert Whiteside, and sister, Mildred Powell.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Williams (Peter) of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Norman Whiteside (Sally) of High Point, N.C.; grandchildren, William Greyson Whiteside and William Norman Whiteside.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Upper Zachary Cemetery in Cashiers, with Rev. Steve Kerhoulas officiating. A community Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Makenle Grace Daniel

Makenle Grace Daniel, infant daughter of Matthew Daniel and Brook Hayle Swafford, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by grandparents, Sandy Swafford of Franklin and Christie Daniel of Commerce, Ga.; great-grandparents, Marianna Solesbee of Hiawassee, Ga., and Emma Swafford of Franklin; great-great grandmother, Betty Holland; brother, Isaiah and uncles, Rocky, Roger and Anthony Daniel all of Commerce, Ga. She was preceded in death by grandmother, Tammy Swafford.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 23, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Rocky Daniel and Nick Nasrallah will serve as pallbearers.
