Ruby Maudine McCall
Ruby Maudine McCall, 96, of Walhalla, S.C., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018. She was born in Wilkes County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Elsie Birdell McCall. She was married to Henry Edgar McCall who passed away June 13, 1981. She was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church and was baptized at Big Creek. She was a hard worker, she worked in a cotton plant and retired from the Cashier Plastic Plant where she worked as a sander. During World War II, she worked as a volunteer welder at the Navy Yard in Panama City. She was a loving mother and neighbor, she loved to play checkers, bingo, fishing, and riding bicycles and she loved music. Survivors include a daughter, Alice Dale Oliver of Salem, S.C.; two sons, William James McCall of Highlands, N.C., and Allen Vernon McCall of Walhalla, S.C.; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. In addition to her mother and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Henry Eugene McCall who died in 2002; and on Jan. 4, 1956, a two-month old baby; on Oct. 29, 1956, a seven-month stillborn son; on Sept 24, 1957, a 1 1/2 month old; on April 10, 1958, a 3 month old; and on May 19, 1962, a four-month old. A funeral service was held at Clear Creek Baptist Church, Monday, Aug. 13, with Rev. Jim Kinard, Rev. Gary McCall and Ralph Campbell officiating. Burial was in Clear Creek Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were men of the Church and grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Hank Manning, Larry Manning, Mark Herron, Andy Chambers, Morris Nix and Kenneth Carver. Ella Faye Dowdle
Ella Faye Dowdle, 90, passed away on Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House. Born in Franklin, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Jessie Sloan Holbrooks and the late Beadel Isenhower Holbrooks. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Doran Dowdle; daughter, Patricia Ann Dowdle; brother, Dillard Holbrooks; and sister, Marie Mason. She was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Walking Club at the church. She loved to cook and serve others. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, camping, shopping and traveling to the beach or the mountains. Surviving are her sons, Larry Dowdle (Gail) of Walhalla and Edwin Dowdle (Lynn) of Catawba; her daughters, Margaret Wilson (Stan) of Loganville, Ga., Doris Mitchell (Warren) of Edgemoor and Wanda Dowdle Davis of Rock Hill; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; and her brothers, Bob Holbrooks and Bill Holbrooks, both of Franklin. Funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 13, at Woodland United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Eddie Usher officiating. Burial was in Forest Hills Cemetery. Mary Hazel Curtis Phillips
Mary Hazel Curtis Phillips, 77, of Bryson City, N.C., passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2018. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Prince Curtis and Cora McCall Curtis. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, George Curtis and Lennie Curtis; and sister Bernice Wood. She attended Franklin Church of God in the past and was most recently a member of Cartoogechaye Church of God. Her favorite hobby was sewing. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Rev. Ellis Phillips; children, Rev. Randal Phillips (Zelda), of Burnsville, N.C., and Rev. Gary Phillips (Denise), of Hamilton, Ala.; sister, Margie Curtis, of Otto; brother, Keith Curtis, of Otto; four grandchildren, Kristen Sherrill (Bobby), Michael Phillips (Christina), Rev. Gary Phillips II (Heather), and Rev. Daniel Phillips (Ashley); seven great-grandchildren, Sara Sherrill, Cody Sherrill, Rachel Phillips, Zoie Phillips, Parker Phillips, Gage Phillips, and Hailey Phillips; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Friday, Aug. 10, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Don Moffitt and Mary’s two sons, Rev. Randal Phillips and Rev. Gary Phillips officiated. Pamela Sue Mills, 60, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018. She was born in Russell County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Carl Siefurt and Anne Ruth Mullins. She was a member of Franklin Nazarene Church, and founder and president of Companion Healthcare. She was a very good listener, comforter, and counselor. She was a very giving person and put others before herself; she had an infectious laugh. She had a love for Jesus, she loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling them. She is survived by her husband, Robert Mills of Franklin; daughter, Amanda Mills Mulkey (Todd) of Franklin; son, Michael Mills (Dana) of Franklin; grandchildren, Allison and Gavin Mills and Avery McGaha, all of Franklin; one sister, and two brothers who she loved darly; numerous aunts, uncles, friends, nieces and nephews. She wes preceded in death by her mother and father, Robert Jerry (RJ) Meade and Annie Ruth Mullins, and one brother. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Rhonda Haney officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Judy Mashburn, 71, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Cleo and Birdell Holland. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Freda Estes. She was a lifelong Baptist. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Mashburn, of Franklin; children, John Shook (Sonya), and Jeff Shook, both of Franklin; brother, Dean Holland, of Asheville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Chandler Austin Shook, Roman Ezra Shook, and Justin Shook; great-grandson, Maverick Shook; and several nieces and nephews. Leopard Marvita Janie Crawford Leopard, 80, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2018. She was born Oct. 6, 1937, in Jackson County to the late Willie Crawford and Ada Jane Stewart Crawford. She was a loving homemaker, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved flowers, birds, gardening and being around people. She was a member of the Pine Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Dills (Bruce) of Franklin, N.C.; Michael Wilson of Cashiers, N.C.; five grandchildren, Ashley Lanning, Bobby Wilson, Chance Wilson, Miley Wilson, and Megan Griffis; three great grandchildren, Carleigh Wilson, Addie Wilson, and Ada Jane Lanning; three siblings Helen Holmes, Ray Crawford, and Laverne Shephard. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pam Griffis; and a grandson, Anthony Alexander. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at 1 p.m., at Pine Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Betty Jean Webb Browning, 75, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018. Born in Jackson County, she was preceded in death by her parents, William Bert Webb and Mamie Trantham Webb; husband, Kenneth Browning; daughter, Regina Faith Browning; sister, Mary Ellis and four brothers and five other sisters. She was a member of Cowee Baptist Church. She was a good cook, devoted Christian and a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Browning Sherrod and husband Ronnie, Jeania Browning Teague and husband Kelly, and Linda Nell Browning; sisters, Ethel McMahan and husband Bobby, and Barbara Shepherd and husband Ray; grandchildren, Gage Hudson Sherrod, Breanna Ashley Teague and fiancé Malcom Cail, Ethan Kane Teague and Kenneth Dawson Browning. Roy Thomas Kohli, Sr.
Roy Thomas Kohli Sr. 73, passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018. He was born Feb. 5, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Ora Kohli and Luella Peters Englehart. He loved woodworking, traveling, family, church family, but most of all he loved the Lord with all his heart. He was the head deacon at the Sylva Seventh Day Adventist Church where he attended for many years. Survivors include his wife, Ann Kohli; children, Roy Kohli Jr. of Asheville, N.C,. Lori Smith (Roy) of Franklin, N.C., David Dann (DeeDee) of Ashland, Ore.; Lisa Grubba (Jim) Montrose, Mich., and Richard Dann(Sara) of Fenton, Mich.; stepfather, Paul Englehart of Fenton, Mich.; sisters, Virginia Fey and Kathy Willis both of Toledo, Ohio, and Ann Dausey (David) of Marquette, Mich.; several nieces and a nephew; and the loves of his life, his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sally Herkel; grandson, Joshua Kohli; brother, Jimmy Kohli; and a sister, Judy Gentry. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at 1 p.m., at the Sylva Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2851 Hwy 441 S. Sylva, with Pastor Tim Sheridan officiating. Lvera Piles Sheffield, 91, of Maryville, Tenn. (formerly of Franklin, N.C.) passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018. She was a member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church since 1956 where she taught children’s classes, was Sunday School superintendent and participated in United Methodist Women. Lvera and her late husband, Ed Sheffield, were owners and operators of Franklin Power Saw Service. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Sheffield, parents, Andrew and Emma Worley Piles and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Nancy and Mike Healy of Maryville Tenn., Jean Anne and David Gant of Rock Hill, S.C.; grandchildren, Ed (Andrea) Gant of Hendersonville, N.C., Andrew (Angelia) Healy of Brevard, N.C., Martha (Steven) Walker of Selma, N.C., Angelia (Tre’) Wright of Senoia, Ga., and Emily (Robert) Coffey of Fort Mill, S.C.; nine great grandchildren, Caleb, Lillianna, Cody, Jonas, and Weston Walker, Georgia and Cambelle Healy, Presley and Bryson Wright; and many special nieces, nephews, friends and caregivers.
