Christine “Christy” Kelly

Christine “Christy” Kelly, 69, of Scaly Mountain, N.C., passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

Born in Miami, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Frank Kelly and Bebe Ann Randall Kelly.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Molly Meiring.  She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Highlands, N.C.  She loved to volunteer, serving as a past president of Rotary Club, lobbying for American Cancer Society, and helping with Highlands public schools and the Literacy Council.

She is survived by her companion, Jim Meiring of Scaly Mountain; five children, Kelly Barbato of Highlands, Erin Sullivan (Kevin) of Durham, N.C., Kate Riechmann (Tim) of Jacksonville, Fla., Casey Case (Brandon) of Atlanta, Ga., and Joseph Daniel Meiring (Kim) of Austin, Texas; four sisters, Pamela Ruth “PR” Kelly of San Rafael, Calif., Randi Kelly of Boulder, Colo., Terry Stottlemyer (Steve) of Sarasota, Fla., and Linda Parrish of Highlands; four grandchildren, Nora Ashby, Addis Mae, Rosalee Joan, Wren, Jayden, and Jonah; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 3, at Highlands First Presbyterian Church.  Kevin M. Sullivan, Minister Emily Wilmarth, Minister Curtis Fussel, and Deacon Scott McNabb officiated.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK  73123.

Alicia Cabe Cody

Alicia Cabe Cody, 41, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019.

Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of Doug Cabe and Barbara Bolick Cabe.  She worked at Dodge Packaging for many years and was of the Baptist Faith. She enjoyed shopping, decorating, and working with children.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandmother, Betty Bolick of Franklin; husband, Bryan Cody of Franklin; stepchildren, Braden Cody and Cameron Cody, both of Franklin; brother, Brent Cabe (Christina) of Greer, S.C.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service was held Sunday, Aug. 4, at Franklin Church of God.  Rev. Jason Smith, Rev. Michael Stephens, and Rev. Phillip Cochran officiated.  Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kevin Cabe, Matthew Cabe, Dean Dodge, Drew Phillips, Braden Cody, and Cameron Cody.

Josephine Dalton

Josephine Dalton, 96, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019.  She was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Monticello, Ky., to the late Steven Clayborn Willis and Pearl Denny Willis. She was a homemaker, and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  She was a very sweet and lovable lady, she loved everyone and everyone loved her.  She was of the Pentacostal faith.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston S. Dalton.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Vitatoe of Franklin; son, Randall Dalton of New Castle, Ind.;  granddaughters, Sherry Vitatoe of Greenville, S.C., Amber Reed and Amy Dalton both of New Castle, Ind.; grandsons, Billy Vitatoe of Virginia, James Dalton and Joseph Dalton both of Florida; numerous great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, Hayleigh Kunde of Franklin, and Amikin Dalton of New Castle, Ind.; sisters, Louise Guffey and Viola Stinson, both of Indiana; brother, William Willis of Indiana.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Neal and a brother, Paul Willis.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

James Hershel Carver

James Hershel Carver

James Hershel Carver, 90, passed away Monday, July 29, 2019.

He was born in Macon County, North Carolina, May 8, 1929, to the late Albert Laffet Carver and Icie Louise McCall Carver. He was married to the late Revylon Talley Carver who preceded him. He worked many years at the Highlands Country Club in many positions by taking care of the golf course, maintenance in homes, and security at the club. He worked 10 years for the Town of Highlands before retiring.  He was also the home care taker for the late  James Floyd. He was a long member of Clear Creek Baptist Church. 

He enjoyed visiting Cades Cove, going to the Pickin’ on the Square in Franklin, watching people bowl, but most of all he loved good foods and sweets. 

Survivors include his son, Kenneth Carver and his wife, Debbie of Franklin; a granddaughter, Rosia Maria Bradley and her husband Chris; three grandchildren, Madison Rose Bradley, Asa Coleman Bradley, and Tyleigh Alyssa Buchanan.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Marie Webb, Edna Beatrice Nix Hurst; and a brother, Thomas Lester Carver. 

A funeral service was held Thursday, Aug. 1, 2019, at the Clear Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Oliver Rice, Rev. Neil Ammons, Rev. Vic Greene and Rev. Jim Kinard officiating. Burial followed in the Clear Creek Community Cemetery. 

Pallbearers were Chris Bradley, Darryl Talley, Bob Lambert, Will Emerson, Chris Mathis, David Dalton, and Asa Bradley.

Donald Napoleon Henry

Donald Napoleon Henry, 81, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

Born in Hamtramck, Mich., he was the son of the late Napoleon “Poli” Jacob Henry and Kari Stewman Henry.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Judy Blaine Henry. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Cruz Henry; three sons, Brian Henry (Ellen) of Hendersonville, Eric Henry (Faye) of Franklin and Kurt Henry of Lancaster, Pa.; grandson, Gabriel Henry of Lancaster, Pa., and four nieces.

A graveside service was held Saturday, Aug. 3, at Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery.  Rev. Steve Reeves officiated.

John Marsh Lathrop

John Marsh Lathrop

John Marsh Lathrop, 78, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on, Aug. 2, 2019.

Born in New London, Conn., he was the son of the late Walter F. Lathrop and Janet Marsh Lathrop.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Kerby Lathrop; and brother, Jim Lathrop. He was a member of Iotla Baptist Church where he served as assistant music director. He loved to work in his yard, listen to music, play piano, and be outside. He moved to Franklin in 1974 and established John Lathrop Electrical Contracting Company. He will always be remembered for his compassion for others and his sweet spirit.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Lois Campell Lathrop; children, Rev. Kerry Lathrop (Kim) of Waynesville, Greg Lathrop (Karen) of Asheville, and Amy Lathrop of Franklin; step children, Gloria Franklin (Hugh) of Franklin, Jerry Oliver (Sharon) of Asheville, and Randy Oliver (Brenda) of Sylva; sister, Judy Cashman of Wellington, Fla.; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 8, at Iotla Baptist Church.  Rev. Brandon Breedlove, Rev. Steve Reeves, and Rev. Kerry Lathrop will officiate.  Burial will be in Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Iotla Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Jim Hedden, Mark Dove, Bucky Asby, David Pangle, Walt Lovett, and Chuck Nolen.

The members of Iotla Baptist Church Choir will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Walter Burt Bryson

Walter Burt Bryson, 72, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2019 in Canton, N.C.

He was born in Macon County, North Carolina, on  Sept. 14, 1946, to the late Charles and Mildred Ledford Bryson. He was in the construction business as a brick mason for many years. He was also a member of All Saints Episcopal Church – St. Cyprian’s Parrish. 

Survivors include his daughter, Kimberly Kay Bryson of Franklin; a son, Norman Harris Bryson of Franklin, N.C.; a sister, Bobbie Bryson of Franklin; four grandchildren, Anthony Bryson, Tracy Bryson, Kindrick Bryson, and Stormy Bryson; two great-grandchildren; and a niece, Jada Bryson. 

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene Bryson, Ted Ledford, and Tommy Bryson; and a sister, Yvonne Bryson. 

A funeral service was held Friday, Aug. 2,  in the chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. Burial followed in the St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church cemetery.

Joyce Tallent Calaway

Joyce Tallent Calaway, 82, passed away Friday, July 26, 2019.

She was born in Macon County March 3, 1937, to the late William Temple Tallent and Margaret Kate Crawford Tallent.  She worked and retired from J.P. Stevens Mill in Gaston County, North Caroloina after many years of service. She was of the Christian faith and was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. 

Survivors include her children, Ronnie J. Dills, Debbie Dills Brown (Ronnie), Sharon I. Davidson (Rocky), Karen I. Lowrance (Jeff), and Randell E. Irvin; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn Baker; and a brother, Bob Tallent. 

She was preceded in death by a grandchild; three brothers, Jr. Tallent, Eddie Tallent, and Ricky Joe Tallent; and a sister, Bessie Tallent Rector.

A private memorial service will be held by the family.

William ‘Bill’ Eugene Nail

William ‘Bill’ Eugene Nail

William “Bill” Eugene Nail, 78, took his heavenly flight to be with his Lord and died peacefully at home with his family by his side on July 31, 2019. He was born Feb. 25, 1941, in Gadsden, Ala., to the late Charles Henry Nail Sr. and Willie Lee Bradley. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at the DMZ during the Korean Conflict. 

He was a building contractor by trade and one of his accomplishments was the building of the Gazebo downtown in Franklin. He built many homes in Macon County. He was a member of the West Franklin House of Prayer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven siblings; one son, Timothy Faustini; and an infant daughter, Dawn Nail. 

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Loretta Nail; a daughter, Tina Marie Pickett (Jeff) of New London, N.C.; a son, Bill Faustini (Joyce) of Burlington, N.C.; a stepson, Stephen Vincenzo de Groot of Norcross, Ga.; grandchildren, Shantel Perrera (Brian); Adam Tinger IV (Mary); Justin Falcon Roy Jr. and Diva Faustini; seven great grandchildren; sisters, Celia Little, Wanda Stanker, Ty Juan Hartman, and Jean Karmer. 

A celebration of life service was held Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Bryant-Grant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Danny Prince officiating.

Talmadge Ray Lillard

Talmadge Ray Lillard, 89, of West Columbia, S.C., formerly of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2019.

Born in Rockingham County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late James P. Lillard and Lottie Scott Lillard.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Albert James Lillard and Richard Irvin Lillard, his sister, Margaret L. Woolard and grandson, Joseph R. White. He attended Washington High School in North Carolina and retired from Diamond Construction in 1968.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betsy Peele Lillard; daughter, Judy Kaye White (Frank); brother, Robert W. Lillard (Cindy);  sister, Mildred Asby (Bucky); nephew, Curtis Woolard, raised by Ray and Betsy; grandchild, Elizabeth White; and great grandchild, Ava White.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m., at Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery.  Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate.
