Hershel Travis Browning Hershel Travis Browning, 94, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Friday, May 11, 2018. Born in Lumber City, Ga., he was the son of the late Hershel Jackson Browning and Addie Cox Browning. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Oris Browning. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and served during WWII and in the Philippines. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Orie J. Browning; two daughters, Dianne Allen of Franklin, Peggy Exum of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one nephew. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 31, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Greg Rogers and Rev. Michael Chastain will officiate with military honors conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108. The family will have a reception and receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Dennis D. Weathers Dennis D. Weathers, 71, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2018. He was born July 25, 1946, in Miami, Fla., and graduated from Hialeah High School in 1965 when he then joined the U.S. Marine Corps. As an aviation ordnance man, he did two tours in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968 and was awarded Combat Aircrew Wings with three stars, Bronze Star with Combat V, nine Air Medals, Combat Action ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Naval Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal with six Stars, and other decorations. Upon leaving the Marine Corps in 1969, he graduated from Florida State University in 1973. He was employed by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department, Kissimmee, Fla., and retired Dec. 7, 2000. He moved to Franklin, in 2004. He was a life member of the USMC Combat Helicopter Association, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, Marine Corps League Smoky Mtn Detachment and the Marine Corps Association. He attended Cartoogechaye Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 18, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Terry ‘Butch’ Von Waller
Terry ‘Butch’ Von Waller Terry “Butch” Von Waller, 60, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018. Born in Tampa, Fla., he was the son of Lillian Zachary Waller and the late Albert Lendal Waller. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Robert Whittle. He was the proud owner of Apple Real Estate and Construction and a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, serving our country from 1977 – 1980. He was an avid athlete who excelled in golf, baseball, softball, hiking and basketball. In addition he was an avid reader and he loved country music. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to anyone who was fortunate enough to know him. Upon meeting him, people instantly liked him and felt as if they had known him for years. He was fortunate to share 27 years with “his rock, his angel, his lucky star,” Susan Whittle Waller of Highlands, where they spent their 24 years of marriage. Additional survivors include his mother, Lillian Zachary Waller of Highlands; daughters, Michele Martin (Josh) of Woodstock, Ga., and Krista Chapman (Justin) of Ballground, Ga.; grandchildren, Rachel Chapman, Zachary Chapman, Karson Martin and Emory Martin and brothers, Ronnie Waller (Vickie) of Highlands and Kevin Waller of Highlands; mother-in-law, Virginia Whittle of Winston-Salem, N.C.; brothers-in law, Scott Whittle (Sharon) of Charlotte, N.C., and Spencer Whittle (Beth) of Winston-Salem; and four nephews and two nieces. Funeral service was held Wednesday, May 9, at First Baptist Church in Highlands with Dr. Mark Ford officiating. Burial followed at Highlands Memorial Park with military graveside rites. Dorothy Elizabeth Allen Crisp Dorothy Elizabeth Allen Crisp, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 11, 2018. She was born in Macon County on Feb. 19, 1928, to the late William Ellis Allen and Ardenia Fowler Allen. She was a dedicated and active member of Holly Springs Baptist Church for 71 years until her declining health. She worked at People’s Department Store for 20 years until her retirement. Most of all she was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Roy P. Crisp of the home; her children, Charles Crisp (Barbara Jo) of Liberty, S.C., Ann Westbrook of Granite Quarry, N.C., Roy F. Crisp of Franklin, N.C., Barbara Spry (Jim) of Cooleemee, N.C., and Tony Crisp (Carole) of Franklin; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Nellie Maude Garrison of Canton, Ga, and Betty Jean Jones of Griffin, Ga; two brothers, Billy Dean Allen of Cornelia, Ga, and Gary Neal Allen of Stanly, N.C. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ellis Allen; grandson, David Crisp, great grandson, Noah Crisp, son-in-law, Joe Westbrook, and daughter-in-law, Betty F. Crisp. A funeral service was held Monday, May 14, at the Holly Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Brent Spry, Rev. Chad Campbell, and Rev. Bud Haire officiating. Charles Robert Wright Charles Robert Wright, 71, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2018. He was born in Sebastian County, Arkansas, to the late Harry and Sara Nell Moore Wright. He was a general contractor in the building industry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church. Survivors include a younger brother, David Preston Wright of Naples, Fla.; aunts, uncles and many cousins. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 19, at 11 a.m., at Highlands United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Lucas and Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Arline Borisch Arline Borisch, 92, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at her residence. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisc., on April 1, 1926. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband. Alexander ‘Al’ Franklin Grant Alexander “Al” Franklin Grant, 74, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, May 7, 2018. Born in Swain County, he was the son of the late Thad and Knight Franklin Grant. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and Real Estate developer. He was a member of West Franklin Church and the Franklin Lions Club. His hobbies include boating, golfing, skiing, traveling and working out. He is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Grant (Jody Tallent) of Carolina Beach, N.C., and Tammy Nelson (Jeff) of Franklin; six grandchildren, Kayleb, Cody, Blake, Tristan, Nicholia and Gabrial and four great grandchildren. A memorial service was held Saturday, May 12, at Macon Funeral Home. Rev. David Lee Williams and Rev. Ketron Moss officiated. She was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Howard Judson Roper and Addie Lois Bryant Roper. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Assembly of God Church. Survivors include her husband, Billy C. Arvey of Franklin; daughter, Lynn Arvey of Franklin; sons, D. J. Arvey (Elizabeth), Tony Arvey and Terry Arvey all of Franklin; grandchildren, Johnathon Collier, Noah Leonheart and Alicia Fuentes (Tyler Green) all of Franklin; brother, Howard Boyd Roper (Mary) of Cullowhee, N.C. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 16, at Mt. Sinai Assembly of God Church with Rev. Johnny Raby and Rev. Barry Bowman officiating. Burial followed in Tippett Cemetery.
