Doris Long

Doris Long, a resident of Highlands, N.C., since 1977, passed away peacefully May, 9, 2019, in the superb care of the cardiac staff at Mission Hospital, Asheville, N.C.

Born in Orange, New Jersey, to parents Bertha S. and Otis R. Moore, she attended Beaver College and Parson’s School of Design. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and, in Highlands, was an active member of the Highlands Cashiers Hospital Auxillary, the Sapphire Chapter of the American Needlepoint Council,.and the United Methodist Church.

She was predeceased by husbands, George Victor Kearse, Jr., Harry E Long and Louis Hixon Smith, Jr. She is survived by a sister, Shirley M Shipston of Worthington, Ohio; son, Mark R. Kearse (Lynda) of Casa Grande, Ariz.; daughter, Cheryl K. Combs (Floyd) of Clemson, S.C.; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Anne Smith Conte (Chet); granddaughter, Jo-Elle K. Wade of Holly Hill, Fla.; niece, Judith S. Keener (Joe) of Worthington, Ohio; and nephew, Richard Shipston of Belleview, Fla.

Mildred Lucille Houston

Mildred Lucille Houston, 92, of Franklin, N.C.,passed away May 14, 2019, in Brevard, N.C. She was born in Jackson County, North Carolina, to the late Isaac Buchanan and Estella Tramham Buchanan. She worked and retired from Blue Bell / Burlington Mills. She also was a member and attended Pine Grove Baptist Church when she was able. 

She is survived by her son, Larry Houston and his wife, Julie of Brevard; two sisters, Nancy Turpin and Mary Ann Cowan from Sylva; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 

She is preceded in death by her late husband, Harley Vernon Houston;  two sons, Mitchell Houston and Danny Houston; three sisters, Essie Jones, Maggie Buchanan, and Viola Buchanan; two brothers, Robert Buchanan and Russell Buchanan. 

A funeral service was held Friday, May 17, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with the Rev. Shane Green officiating. Burial was in the Sugar Fork Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brian Houston, Jeff McCall, Ethon McCall, Tyler McCall, T.J. Hedden, and Lowell Buchanan.

Beatrice Elizabeth Ezechel

Beatrice Elizabeth Ezechel, 95, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, May 18, 2019.

Born in New York, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth Peters.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Minnich; second husband, Joseph Ezechel; and daughter, Elizabeth Ann Markham.  She was a retired nurse and was of the Lutheran faith.

She is survived by five children, Robert Minnich, Bill Minnich, Jon Minnich, Heidi Minnich Stone and Melissa Aldrich; five stepchildren, Wendy Wilkens, Barbara Myers, Gail McCall, Larry Ezechel, and Billy Ezechel; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am, Saturday, May 25, at Resurrection Lutheran Church.  Pastor Patrick O’Neal will officiate.

Gary Cooper Scott

Gary Cooper Scott

Gary Cooper Scott, 83, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, May 17, 2019.

Born in Grand Ridge, Fla., he was the son of the late Hallis Scott and Edna Bryant Scott. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Patricia Scott; daughter, Patricia Kimberly Scott; sister, Lynn Scott; and brother, Hallis Scott, Jr. He served in the National Guard for seven years and was a businessman and retailer.  He was a member and elder of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church and enjoyed playing golf and working in the yard.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Scott; son, Dr. L. Keith Scott (Chris) of Shreveport, La.; stepchildren, Richard Bales of Sarasota, Fla. and Timothy Bales (Cindy) of Sarasota, Fla.; brothers, Bruce Scott and Thomas Kelly Scott both of Ft. Myers, Fla.; sister, Vickie Shores (Jerry) of Hickman, Tenn.; grandchildren, Samantha Jo Scott, Matthew Travis Scott; and several step grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Pastor Tommy Jordan will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.

Joyce Hurst Dean

Joyce Hurst Dean, 84, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, May 20, 2019.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Thedford Hurst and Annie Mae Hall Hurst.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Dean Sr., and sister, Audrey Ashe.

She is survived by her son, JR Dean; six grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Gail Sargent Motley

Gail Sargent Motley

Gail Sargent Motley, 78, of Otto, N.C., passed away Friday, May 17, 2019.

Born in Miami, Fla., she was the daughter of the late George M. Sargent and Myra Edna Evans Sargent.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Charles Motley who died July 30, 2009; brother, Rodney Sargent; and sister, Janice Horne.  She retired as a supervisor from Southern Bell Telephone Company.  She was an active member of First Alliance Church where she was a member of the Women’s Prayer Group and a former deaconess. She enjoyed flowers and animals, but above all she loved the Lord and her family.

She is survived by her children, Shelise Phillips (Clay) of Dallas, Ga., and Charles Motley II (Tammy Keezer) of Franklin; sister, Marilyn Goble (Bob) of Ela, Texas;  grandchildren, Zee Keezer, Drew Bishop and Tori Bishop; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, May 21, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Scott Eichelberger officiated.  Burial was in Rush Cemetery.

William Francis Jones

William Francis Jones, 73, of Otto, N.C., passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019.

Born in Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late Walston Stanley Jones and Margaret Converse Starkweather Jones.  He enjoyed white water paddling.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret A. Jones; two sons, Roy Allen Jones (Elena) of Ruskin, Fla., and Michael Thomas Jones (Diane) of Palm Harbor, Fla.; four siblings; two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Clarence Tallent Jr.

Clarence Tallent Jr.

Clarence Tallent Jr., 45, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, May 20, 2019.

Born and raised in Franklin, he was the son of Clarence Tallent Sr. (Catherine) and the late Hazel Mae Conhiser Pannell. He had two passions in his life: his career at Millis Transfer and being with his beloved family. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he enjoyed helping with the Community Meal. He also enjoyed cooking and was known and loved by many.

In addition to his father and stepmother, he is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Houston Tallent of Franklin; children, Devan Tallent (Jenine) of Burnsville, N.C., Dakota Tallent of Prattville, Ala., Ivry Tallent of Franklin, Jordyn Sanford of Franklin, and Alex Sanford of Franklin; sister, Lisa Tallent of Clayton, Ga.; uncle, Frank Conhiser of Franklin; grandson, Blayze Harwood of Weaverville, N.C.; and two nieces, Sydney Shirley and Andrea Shirley, both of Clayton, Ga.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church.  Rev. Jack Jarrett and Rev. Blake Arnold will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at First Baptist Church.
