Bertha Irene Bumgarner

N.C., passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2018. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Vernon Bumgarner and Nellie Belle Evitte Bumgarner.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Eloth Bumgarner and Carl Bumgarner, and two sisters, Edith Jennings and Jessie Rogers. She was a member of Community Baptist Church and worked at Westcare Hospital as an X-ray technician. She was also a member of the Red Hat Club and Southwestern Community College Alumni. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, JL Watson; three daughters, Susan Jones (Lewis), of McEwen, Tenn., Kimberly Cunningham (Boyce), of Franklin, and Cristy Passmore (Jamie), of Franklin; three grandchildren, Jennifer Cunningham, Danielle Coleman, and Joshua Coleman; two great-grandchildren, McKenna Waldroop and Jaielle Coleman; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. David Williams, Rev. Jamie Passmore, and Rev. Rondal Owen officiated.  Burial was in Buck Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jamie Passmore, Boyce Cunningham, Lewis Jones, Josh Coleman, Jeff Clark, Randy Cunningham, and Bobby Ledford. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Greenway, 573 E. Clyde Houston Jr.

Clyde Houston Jr., 83, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Clyde Houston Sr. and Frankie Nell Sutton Houston.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Shane Houston.  He retired from the U.S. Air Force, was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, and enjoyed playing golf. He is survived by two sisters, Janice Carpenter of Franklin and Judy Donaldson of Hollywood, Md.; two grandsons, Joe Houston of Atlanta, Ga., and Josh Houston of Franklin; and granddaughter, Crystal Houston of Atlanta, Ga. A graveside service was held Monday, Nov. 12, at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.  Rev. Donnie Seagle officiated. Macon Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Deanne Gibson Roles, 71, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2018. Born in Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Paul Joseph Gibson and Helen Louise Edwards Gibson.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Janet Gibson Becker of Silver Spring, Md.  She graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in Chemistry and worked as a Chemist for BASF in Enka, N.C.  She was a member of Sylva-Webster Class of 1965; Macon, Jackson, Swain, Buncombe, and Madison Genealogy Societies; and the North Carolina Genealogy Society (she loved to attend the N.C. conferences and was a presenter at times).  She is survived by her children, Wendy Awald (Stephen) of Hendersonville, Heidi Daniels of Franklin, and Chris Roles (Norma) of Concord, Calif.; five grandchildren, Caice Roles of New Jersey, Shelton Freeman of Franklin, Sawyer Awald of Hendersonville, Conner Awald of Hendersonville, and Elias Roles of Concord, Calif.; brother-in-law, Perry Becker of Maryland; and nieces, Lauren Becker and Caroline Becker Silva, both of Maryland. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Vic Greene and Rev. Janet Greene officiated.  Burial was in the Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery. Elizabeth Mary Chorba Willard

Elizabeth Mary Chorba Willard

Elizabeth Mary Chorba Willard, 69, of Franklin, N.C., and Sarasota, Fla., passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018.  She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late George Joseph Chorba Sr. and Mildred H. Chorba. She was an interior designer and loved to flip houses in real estate.  She was a member of the Garden Club and Macon County Library, and loved to collect antiques.  She attended St. Agnes Episcopal Church and St. John’s Episcopal Church, she was born and raised Catholic. She was very active in Trinity by the Cove in Naples, Fla.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Chorba in 2016 and a sister, Mary Chorba in 2002. She is survived by her brother, George Chorba of Gettysburg, Pa. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m., in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends following the service.
