Helen Louise Penland

Helen Louise Penland was born on Dec. 19, 1921, in Sherman, Texas. On July 5, 2016, she was reunited with her husband of 69 years. Robert L. Penland, the love of her life, who preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents J.Y. and Myrtle McAlister and sibling, Jack McAlister Jr.

She met her husband while on vacation in Washington, DC. She went to Temple Business College and worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II.

The Penlands raised their children in Coral Gables, Fla. In 1972, they retired and moved back to the Smoky Mountains where they enjoyed 35 years of retirement together.

She was quite a creative artist. She was involved in many civic organizations and enjoyed bridge, reading and writing.

She had a great sense of humor. She was the first to laugh when the smoke detector went off and her children knew dinner was ready.

She is survived by her two daughters, Pamela Goldsmith and son-in-law, Fred Goldsmith of Franklin, N.C., and Penny Ross and son-in-law, Bill Ross of St. Augustine, Fla.; granddaughters, Kimberly McDaniel and husband Joel of Raleigh, N.C., and Robin Park and husband Clint of Atlanta, Ga.; great grandchildren, Kayla and Kinsey McDaniel of Cullowhee, N.C., and Gavin and Abby Paige Park of Atlanta, Ga.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, at Holly Springs Baptist Church, Franklin. Pastor Joel McDaniel and Rev. Brandon Breedlove will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Clint Park, Gavin Park, Steve Penland, Tim Teague, Dwight Valentine and Rod Brandt.

Ralph Cleveland Rice, 73, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, July 7, 2016.

Born in Jackson County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Grover and Doris Collins Rice. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Steve. He attended Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church and was an avid Nascar fan.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda; son, Phil Rice and wife Sandy of San Diego Calif.; daughter, Joan Welch and husband Jeff of Franklin; five grandchildren; brothers, GF Rice of Brevard, N.C., and David Rice of Rosman, N.C.; sister, Carolyn Stiwinter of Franklin.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 16, at Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church in Franklin. Rev. Johnny Norris and Rev. Jamie Passmore will officiate.  Burial will be in the Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Dorothy Sine Dodge, 102, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, July 9, 2016.

Born in Smoke Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late David Sine and Frances Fonek Sine. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth A. Dodge; seven sisters and two brothers. She was former owner of The Quality Inn Motel and member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

She is survived by daughter, Pat Gibbs and husband Harvey of Franklin; son, David Dodge and wife Phyllis of Franklin; five grandchildren, Candace McGee of Delaware, Chris Gibbs, Todd Gibbs, Paul Dodge and Tony Dodge all of Franklin; 11 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Joseph  “Joe Joe” Howard Eubanks, 65, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, June 20, 2016.

Born on Jan. 11, 1951, in Brevard, N.C., he was the son of Martha Eubanks Wood. He attended Cowee Baptist Church and loved spending time on the river “The Beach.”

In addition to his mother, he is survived by daughters, Carolyn Huggins (Keith) of Brevard, Tammy Landreth (Breck) of Rosman, N.C.; son, Joseph Eubanks (Jessica) of Lakeland, Fla.; brothers, James Aberocrombie and Roger VanHorn both of Lakeland, Fla., John Eubanks, of Horse Shoe, N.C.; sister, Julie Tank of Curtice, Ohio; nine grandchildren  and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 5, at Cowee Baptist Church in Franklin, followed by a short memorial time at the river (the beach). A meal will follow at the church. Alma Bolick, 98, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2016.  Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rose Ella Holland Moss. She was married to John D. Bolick who preceded her in death.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.  She loved sewing, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Velma of Franklin; a son, Michael of Franklin; two grandchildren, Kimberly Hall and Lonna; five great grandchildren, Maranda, Nathaniel, Erica, Tyler and Kalena; two great great grandchildren, Kaetlyn and Cameron and one sister, Dovie McCall of Highlands.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Trula Cabe.

A graveside service was held Friday, July 8, at Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Greg Rogers officiated.

Barbara Ann Moffitt Cromer, 76, of Franklin, N.C., went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 10, 2016.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of Clara Stamey Moffitt and the late Roy Moffitt. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband Ralph C. Cromer and a daughter, Stephanie Cromer.

She volunteered with Teen Challenge, she enjoyed crafting, painting and researching genealogy. She was a member of Prentiss Church of God where she was active in the Women’s Ministries.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by five children, Robert Cromer and wife Parish of Hobe Sound, Fla., Shannon Cromer and wife Tanya, Vivian Simmons and husband Fritz, Valerie Stafford and husband Huey and Chelsea Heard and husband Josh, all of Franklin; six brothers and sisters, Alma Berg, Bud Moffitt and wife Dee, Don Moffitt and wife Kathy, Frank Moffitt and wife Shelly, and Terry Moffitt and wife Debbie, all of Franklin and Helen Ammons and husband Earl of Bakersfield, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Amanda, Cara, Cristine, Robert II, Chloe, Alec, Robert, Matthew, Seth, Hannah and Savannah; 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Prentiss Church of God. Rev. Kevin Chapman and Rev. Don Moffitt will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m., one hour prior to the service at the church.

Cynthia “Robin” Byrd, 56, of Franklin, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016.

Born in Pensacola, Fla., she was the daughter of Jerry Foster Shofner and Margie Channell Shofner.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 30 years, Jim Byrd; two sons, Zachary Chase Byrd of Philadelphia, Pa., and Parker Ford Byrd of Franklin and two sisters, Cherie Lee of Columbia, S.C., and Shelly Metzer of Pensacola, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, July 17, at the Franklin House of Prayer.

A private gathering of friends was held and burial will be in the Bayview Memorial Park, Pensacola, Fla.

Charles Peter Friedling, 62, of Franklin, N.C., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 3, 2016. Born in Tampa, Fla., he was a son of the late John and Margaret Friedling. He was proud of his time that he served with the Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Linda and brother Paul, both of Franklin.

He is survived by two sons, Jason of Tampa, and Joseph, Abby of Franklin; two grandsons, Jacob and James; one brother, John of Franklin; a sister, Elaine of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nephew, Nathan and niece, Kathryn.

Betty Wood Foxx, 68, of Sylva, N.C., passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2016.

Born in Macon County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late John Wood and Fannie Mae Keener. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter in-law, Cathy Cabe Foxx. She was a member of Watauga Baptist Church. She was a founding member of Sylva Partners in Renewal, an organizer of the Sylva Christmas Parade for over 20 years and founding board member of the Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Bill Fox; son, Barry Foxx and wife Nancy of Cullowhee, N.C.; daughter, Belinda Bryson and husband Rick of Sylva; grandchildren, Ty Foxx and wife Kieran, Haley Foxx, Kajol Patel, Autumn Bryson, Mitch Wike, Macy Wike; great grandchildren, Sloan Foxx, Zabel Foxx; and special friend, Kathy Wilson and her daughter, Tonya Snider and her children, Tristen, Sawyer and Eli.

Funeral service was held Saturday, July 9, at Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Wesley Price, Rev. Josh Hyde, Rev. David Williams and Rev. Rusty Wolfrey officiated.  Burial was in the Victory Baptist Church Cemetery in Sylva.

Pallbearers were J.J. McCall, George Roper, John Hartley, Roger Bishop, Ray Sanders and Larry Bishop.

Donald Alfred Vaughan, 78, of Plant City, Fla., died July 3, 2016, in Franklin, N.C.

A native of Nitro, W.Va., and raised in Majestic, Ky., he was the son of the late John and Gwendolyn Goble Vaughan.

Also preceding him in death were his twin brother, Ronald Goble Vaughan by three days; father, Hurchell (Ethel) Allison and brother, Clay Allison.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 32 years, Juanita Singletary Vaughan; step-children, Charlene (William) Doehring, Joseph Robinson; sister, Karen (Al) Plank; brothers, Glen (Judy) Allison, Ernie (Murlena) Allison; grandchildren, Cody (Ami) Shelton and their children, Tristan, Brylie, and Finley; Andrew (Ariel) Shelton, John Phillip Shelton, Sarah Shelton, Benjamin Shelton.

He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and retired from the Army National Guard as a CW3. He also retired from teaching in the public school system after 25 years. He was a loving, giving man who idolized his grandchildren, especially his great grandchildren. He and Juanita loved to travel, spending much of their time annually in North Carolina.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, July 13, at Haught Funeral Home in Plant City. He was interred with military honors at Florida National Cemetery.
