Henry ‘Edward’ (Slick) Cagle

Henry “Edward” (Slick) Cagle, 72, of Franklin, N.C., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 14, 2016.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Harry and Mae Shuler Cagle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll Cagle, and mother-in-law, Eula Cruse.

He enjoyed traveling, was an avid western movie fan, and was a #1 Carolina Panthers fan.  He ran the Franklin Motel for over 25 years and then went to work for the Macon County School System as a bus driver (fondly called “Mr. Ed” by the students).  He also worked part-time at the ABC Store.  He loved his family, especially the light of his life, his granddaughter, Kinley.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Pat Cruse Cagle; daughters, Lacey Cagle and fiancé Shannon Austin, Samantha Brooke Cagle, and Crystal Carver; granddaughters, Kinley Austin and Bree Carver; brother, Larry Bo Cagle; sisters, Edna Sams, and Jo Johnson, all of Sylva and Ida Broome of Waynesville; brother-in-law, Richard Lynn Cruse of Franklin; special nieces, Connie Green and husband Mark, and Jill Cagle, all of Sylva; special family friend, Nell Sutton; and sister-in-law, Wanda Cagle; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Macon Funeral Home, PO Box 1175, Franklin, NC  28744 to help with funeral expenses.

Charles Ross Keener, 89, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, July 15, 2016.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Willard D. Keener and Albia Byrd Keener. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, Hazel Penland Roland, Earl Keener, Evelyn Wells, Hershell Keener and Bob Keener.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during WWII in Italy. He was an avid sportsman and could be found hunting, woodworking, watching the race, playing the guitar or the piano. He was a member of Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church and the proud great-great grandson of Ulrich Keener, 1st Circuit Court Methodist Minister to the Cherokee Indians.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Catherine Cabe Keener; one daughter, Cathy Dianne Riggan (Bob) of Jamestown, N.C., and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Sunday, July 17, at Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church. Rev. Al Beck officiated with military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108. Burial was in the Clarks Chapel UMC Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steve Cabe, Wesley Freeman, Robbie Keener, Tim Keener, Bill Swift and Bob Riggan.

John Daniel Wilson, 76, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2016.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Herman Wilson and Gaynell Duvall Pendergrass.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Pendergrass and two sisters, Jane Dickard and Ann Ledford.  He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing, hunting and trapping.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Maxine Donkelaar Wilson; three children, Darren Mitchell Wilson of Washington, Penny Whiting (Antonio) of Louisville, Ky., and Scott Donkelaar of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; three brothers, Bruce Wilson, Charles Pendergrass and Roger Pendergrass, all of Franklin; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Saturday, July 16, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.  Rev. Jim Dusek and Rev. Guy Duvall officiated.  Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim Fouts, George Wyatt, George Lynch, Mitchell Owenby, Ray James, Chris Pendergrass, Derick Pendergrass and Wyatt Pendergrass.

Tommy Nelson Stoker

Tommy Nelson Stoker, 71, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016.

Born in Lake Charles, La., he was the son of the late Clyde Stoker and Verde Belaire Stoker.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Blair Stoker. He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran and was retired from the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Department.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ernst Stoker; two sisters, Julie Landry of Lake Charles, La., and Mary Gayle of Marble Falls, Texas; brother, Mark Stoker of Texas and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

No services are planned.

Robert Charles Kraus

Robert Charles Kraus, passed away on June 8, 2016, at St Francis Hospital in Greenville, S.C. Formerly a resident of St. Petersburg, Fla., he made his home in Franklin from 1975 until late last year when he and Eleanor, his wife of 35 years, moved to South Carolina to be near family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Diane Woodall (Joey) and Laura Loyd (Ken); sons, Mark Kraus (Denise) and Chris Kraus; granddaughters, Jennifer Woodall, Karina Loyd and Isabelle Loyd; stepsons, Konrad Blank (Sherri) and Keith Blank; and his best pal, Harley, the German Shepherd.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Sunday, July 24, at 2:30 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Harrison Ave., in Franklin. The family will receive friends following the service and ask that everyone join them in Memorial Hall for refreshments and fellowship.

Mary Cramer Mickler, 85, of Pompano Beach, Fla., passed away on July 9, 2016. She was born Nov. 27, 1930, in Ft. Myers, Fla., to Francis H. and Pearl Cramer. She was a Pioneer resident of Pompano Beach. Mary is pre-deceased by her husband, Revis A. Mickler and son, Scott Cramer Mickler and great grandson, Riley Maynard.

She is survived by her sons, Robert Mickler (Susan) of Pompano Beach, Douglas Mickler (Barbara) of Vero Beach, Fla., and Pete Mickler (Catherine) of Franklin, N.C.; grandchildren Danielle Buurma (Clark), Kurt Mickler (Michelle) Chad Mickler (Kristen), Kristen Barton (Tim), Tambi Cobb, Amy Newell (Matthew), Faye Mickler, Roseann Saviako (Ben), and Lily Mickler; great-grandchildren, Ian Buurma, Cole Buurma, Hannah Mickler, Scott Russell Mickler, Ella Mickler, Sheldon Ohler, Madison Ohler, Revis Mickler, Dylan Barton, Riley Barton, Mali Cobb, Marshall Cobb, Maris Newell and Jude Newell, Adel Newell, Simon Newell, Judah Savaiko, and Lenore Mickler.

Funeral service was held at First Baptist Church, Pompano, followed by burial in Pompano Beach Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lord’s Gift House at First Baptist Church Pompano.

Carson Ryan Wiggin, infant son of Josh Ryan Wiggin and Toni LeAnn Brewer, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016. In addition to his parents, Carson is survived by a sister, Mya Rae Lynn Roberts; paternal grandfather, Andy Wiggin of Franklin; paternal grandmother, Julie Stokes of Milledgeville, Ga., and maternal grandparents, Shannon and Teresa Lakes.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Forest Jones officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 am, one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Betsy Patricia Myers, 63, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016.  Born in Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Alice Jenkins Crisp.  She was employed by Tek Tone Sound & Signal. She was of the Baptist faith and was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Hopkins (Tony) of Franklin; two sons, David Charles Myers (Paula) and Thomas Allen Myers all of Franklin; two brothers, Richmond Crisp of Franklin and Jerry Crisp of Claremont, N.C., and three grandchildren, Brady McConnell, Erica Myers and Abbie Hopkins.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Jamie Crisp.

A private service will be held to honor her memory.
