Caledin James Wylupek

Caledin James Wylupek, 21, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Nov. 11, 2016.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of Joseph and Deborah Wylupek. He was active in swimming, soccer and football at Franklin High School. He graduated from New Visions Academy and joined the 210th MP Co. Army National Guard. He was a member of Flight 06 with Mountain Top Chrysalis in 2010 and remained a part of the family formed at Camp Living Water. He was currently attending North Carolina A&T State University, where he was studying Criminal Justice and played flag football. He enjoyed knife collecting and spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Michael and Sharron Hoffman of Seffner, Fla.; two sisters, Lydia and Emily Wylupek both of Franklin; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Franklin Covenant. Pastor John Makinson will officiate. Full Military Rites will be conducted by the North Carolina Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Yokel, Jesse Pinkston, Michael McGee, Dustin Woods, Chad Allen and Sean Gerhart.

Honorary pallbearer in absentia is Nathan Miles.

Willa Mae Cloer Tippett

Willa Mae Cloer Tippett, 79, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016.

Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. W.A. Cloer and Roxie Passmore Cloer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David Cloer.  She was an active member of Iotla Baptist Church and worked with her family for many years at Franklin Frozen Foods.  She was an avid fisherman; enjoyed flower gardening and was a talented seamstress.  She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed her life living on the farm.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Tippett; two children, Steve Tippett and wife Kelli of Franklin and Sherry Jones and husband Larry of Mooresville, N.C.; two sisters, Bennie Collett and husband Gene, Patricia Ballew and husband Joe; brother, Buddy Cloer and wife Ida, all of Franklin; three grandchildren, Adam Jones, Brooke Tippett and Amy Tippett as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 11, at Iotla Baptist Church. Rev. Steve Reeves and Rev. Judson Hall officiated.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bill Tippett, David Tippett, Adam Jones, Jeff Cloer, Ron Collett and Stan Penland.  Honorary Pallbearers were Carmen Penland and Tammy Holland.

John W. Rogers

John W. Rogers, 77, of Highlands, N.C., passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, at his home.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Ed and Velma Johnson Rogers. He was the owner of John W. Rogers Plumbing Services. He served as former pastor of several churches in North Carolina and Georgia and was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Wanda Keener Rogers; two sons, Wayne Rogers and wife Josie and Greg Rogers and wife Terri all of Franklin; two granddaughters, Taylor and Jordan Rogers; three grandsons, Tucker, Eli and Jake Rogers; three sisters, Charlotte Reed and Elizabeth Billingsley both of Clayton, Ga., and Lucille McClure of Highlands and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Sunday, Nov. 13, at Pine Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Roy Lowe and Rev. Mike Chastain officiated. Burial was held in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Gold Mine Community, Highlands.

Pallbearers were Brian Lowe, Phillip Lowe, Scott Billingsley, Ralph Reed, Lamon Brown and Kevin Rogers. Deacons of Pine Grove Baptist Church will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Ricky Allen Gilman, 52, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016.

Born in Dodgeville, Wisc., he was the son of John and Diane Gilman. He worked as a mechanic most of his life and enjoyed hunting. He was a Christian by faith.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Frances Carol Waller; five children, Ricky Gilman II, Joshua Gilman, John Gilman, Jacob Gilman and Dakota Gilman all of Franklin; three stepchildren, Jennifer Hurst and husband Alex, James “Jimmy” Waller and wife Rene and Jessie Waller all of Franklin; one brother, Rob and two sisters Terri and Traci all of Wisconsin; eight grandchildren, Cory, Aubrey, Mindi and Maddi, Samuel, Lexie, Hope and Ashley and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Sandra Tuthill Mandia, 75, of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., passed away Nov. 9, 2016.

Born in Newburgh, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Christie and Mary Nicoll Tuthill.

She worked as a medical secretary, a real estate broker salesman but most of all, loved her time in retail sales.

She is survived by her two sons, Richard Mandia and wife Maria Meneses of Pigeon Forge, and Christie Mandia of Bethel Park, Pa.; one sister, Christie Ann Pattin of Savannah, Ga., and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Greg Rogers will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Association.

Pastor Ann Miller Farrell

Pastor Ann Miller Farrell, 87, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Nov. 11, 2016.

Born in Bedford, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Forest and Freida Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers and a step-grandson, Nicholas Covello. She was an ordained minister; president of the Gem Country Republican Women’s Club and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. She loved to cook and bake and was previously in charge of the kitchen at the Christian Training Center.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Burket Ray Farrell; two children, Harry “Butch” Imler of Spotsylvania, Pa., and Hedy Shaffer of Shellsburg, Pa.; four stepchildren, Sandra Lavely of Orange City, Fla., Donna Covello of Denver, Colo., Steven Farrell of Cresson, Pa., and Kelly Boyer of Denver, Colo.; brother, Statler Miller of Bedford, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Christian Training Center.
