Tractor trailer overturns on dangerous gorge road

A tractor trailer truck loaded with cross ties went down an embankment Tuesday, just past Buck Creek Road on the Highlands Road. The truck was driven by Clarke C. Taninies of Preston Park, Pa. The truck went off the right side of the road overturning down the embankment. Due to the narrow, winding roads in the Cullasaja Gorge, tractor trailers are not permitted on 64 E past Walnut Creek Road. Taninies was charged with failure to wear seatbelt and driving on a non-designated truck route violation. He was transported to the North East Georgia Medical Center by ambulance. Traffic was diverted through Buck Creek for several hours. North Carolina State Trooper Hunter Gass was the investigating officer. Cullasaja Fire Department, Macon County Sheriffs department and Macon County E.M.S. responded to the scene. Photo by Vickie Carpenter
